Hey everyone I am new to this game and I run tank in everything I do! I was looking into the Jedi Knight but my buddy told me it wasn't the best choice for a tank! I'm not sure what the best option/choice is for a tank, so I'm looking for some veteran feedback from everyone! I would like to run Jedi Knight but if there is a better option I would love for someone to inform me! Thanks everyone

If you like Empire side, I'd go with a Sith Assassin personally. It's fun, you can stealth everywhere and you carry a double bladed light-saber. It's so much fun for me and the story is really awesome too.

If you like Republic goody-too-shoes, roll a Jedi Shadow. It plays the same as a Sith Assassin, though I didn't really like the story all that much but you may think differently. The only difference between Assassin and Shadow is the name and the looks of the attacks.

You can also roll a Jedi Guardian or Sith Juggernaut, or if you want to use guns you can roll a Trooper Vanguard or Bounty Hunter Powertech. Just be sure to put your skill points in their defense trees.

Have fun in SWToR!

Whichever one that you enjoy enough to get to 50, grind out end game with, and still crave more.

Yes that's a tired old phrase, but it's used for a reason. Even if you assume to "not care" in the interest of min/max, the difference isn't all that big in all honesty.

Guards generally are considered the weakest in terms of threat gen, but are considered quite strong defensively due to their abundance of cooldowns. This makes tanking FPs more of a pain than tanking a boss in an Op and often means you'll need to CC liberally else you'll alienate a few healers.

Shadows are kind of in the opposite boat. They generate great threat, but due to their shield buff they can be squishier during fast/multiple mob damage encounters.

Vanguards are, in my opinion, more of an in-between.

All of them can tank all content.

**Disclaimer: My knowledge comes from personal experience. I may not be the best and I may not have the best grasp on all aspects of this class/tree but from my personal experience and knowledge I find the following to be true. Feel free to correct any mistakes or misconceptions I may have stated as the last thing I want to do is mislead people... I'm just trying to be helpful ^_ T **

Having a level 50 Assassin in the Darkness (Tank) tree, I know a little bit about this specific classes tanking abilities.

Assassin / Shadow tanks seem to be the best overall single target tanks; especially bosses due to their abilities to a passive self heal from Dark Charge / Combat Techniques stance when you use any attack vs the target as well as their ability to self heal with Force Lightning / Projection (not sure if this is the right skill name for the equivalent skill as I don't have a Shadow?) after speccing a certain skill in the tank tree.

They also have Overcharge Saber (Don't know Shadow equivalent, sorry) which instantly heals yourself for 10% max hp plus increases the chance of Dark Charge / Combat Techniques self heal proc for a limited time.

They also get a semi-spammable self buff called Dark Ward / Kinetic Ward that increases shield rating by 15% which enables them to shield more often thereby lowering incoming damage over the course of a fight. Most of these skills effectiveness, especially Dark / Kinetic Ward drops to nearly zero against multiple targets hence why they excel at single target tanking the best.

Heals aside, they also have a few skills, besides taunts, that have increased threat attached to them, Shock mainly but Force Pull is good as your are rushing the target and while bosses are immune to the pull in effect; the high threat caused is still effective and gives a boost to your threat immediately at the start of a fight,

These classes also have a bit higher damage output than the other tanks so this also helps them to keep their target focused on them throughout the fight as well.

I didn't bother to mention WIther / Slow Time or Discharge above because my understanding is they mostly shine during offtanking scenarios. Now that isn't to say they aren't used during single target boss fights because they definitely are since Wither / Slow Time decrease the damage output of affected targets as well as produce a large amount of threat and slows movement speed; while Discharge lowers affected targets accuracy. But since they are AoE's I figured I'd mention them separately.

I'm pretty sure Vanguards / Powertechs are the semi ranged AoE tanks due to their higher Armor Rating from Heavy Armor and Guardians / Juggernauts are the melee range AoE Tanks for the same reasons but beyond that I have no clue as I have no personal experience with either.

Guardian/Juggernaut - Not hard to tank properly. Best defensive CDs of all tanks. Very good at tanking single targets (mainly bosses). Lacks AoE attacks (so you must be ready to coordinate and lead your team into CCing large groups).

Shadow/Assassin - Very hard to tank properly (it requires a lot of micromanagement of your skills and buffs). Decent in tanking AoE and single targets. Although I wouldn't recomend this class as a tank option for someone new to the game or to MMORPGs. But it can be a hell of a tank when played by an experienced player.

Vanguard/Powertech - Fairly easy to tank properly. Decent defensive CDs and single target tanking. Best AoE of all tanks. Since having both melee and ranged attacks this class can be less stressful to tank at times. (I'd recomend you this one).

But then again this game is very story based. So if you feel like playing a Jedi character don't be afraid to pick one. All classes can tank everything in the game.

For Shadows, it's "Telekinetic Throw", not "Project" that provides the self-heal. You have to spec into Harnessed Shadows to get the self-heal.

The following is from a sticky in the Shadow forum:

Quote:

Q: What's the difference between the three types of tanks?

A: Jedi Guardian tanks have the most survivability cooldowns, and once they get rolling, they have the most forgiving resource mechanic. They have the most issue generating threat, especially in ranged or AoE situations. Jedi Shadows have the fewest and weakest survivability cooldowns, but have the ability to self-heal regularly, a very high block chance, strong AoE threat and okay ranged threat. Shield Specialist Vanguards have a moderate amount of survivability cooldowns, okay AoE threat, great ranged threat/battlefield mobility, and the best straight mitigation. Their resource mechanic is very punishing if mishandled. The two force-users have more apparent flaws at lower levels, but grow into the role fully later.
