For roleplay purposes, I was wondering if anyone could proffer a legitimate reason why two Jedi, very old friends, would argue. Perhaps an argument so rattling that it would cause one of them to leave the order.

Depends, what time period? For example if it was during the Clone Wars, I could see two of them arguing over the use of clones and whether it is right or wrong to send them into combat.
