Let's not forget that there are different kinds of F2P games: Those that are designed to be F2P, and those that--for whatever reasons--turn from P2P to F2P.

In my experience, there's a clear difference between those that start F2P (usually of sub-par quality) and those that become F2P over the course of their development.

MTs are the one and only dealbreaker for me at this time.

F2P isn't FREE
it's a lie

Back in the arcade era, video games used to be $0.25 per PLAY.

On topic: no I don't prefer F2P, although it did prompt me to check out DCUO before the launch of this game. Haven't been back since, and that's not because I hated the game it was actually pretty well designed; I just like TOR better.

free to play is a huge money maker, DDO was brought back from the edge if death, it opens up game play to extreme casual players, who have only a couple of hours to play a week this way they buy thier content as they go and play it at thier own pace.. i suspect the days of the standard sub based mmo's might be coming to an end in the next few years.

i prefer to pay a sub, 14.99 it's cheap for 24/7 entertainment.. no hassle play..

Whether that's good or bad is up to individual players to decide for themselves. I've enjoyed P2P games just as much as I've enjoyed F2P games.
Yeah, I played both versions of STO, doesn't seem to be too different, but the map post F2P is more cluttered and hard to read. Navigating is a pain. They may have changed / fixed that, I'm not sure.

My problem with F2P is the constant breaking of emersion: "You enter a strange and slimy dungeon ... Please pay us $14.99 to access this content." "Buy tokens, tokens, tokens!" Ugh.

They need to make it f2p keep the fluff in the cs and the gear OUT of it. Ways to exchange in game coin for cs coin.

the only win in the Free to play DDO is....did we complete the quest/dungeon/raid? yes? win, no? try again.
DDO isnt' really traditional F2P its A La Carte or Subscription with a buff, cosmetic shop. The gear in game far better than whats on the shop so your right you can't Pay 2 Win thankfully.

So basically you create your own definitions?

F2P Free to play. Do you need to pay anything beyond the purchase of the game? If NO, then you are playing the game for free.

If a game has more than you in the world, it is not a single player game. Does SWTOR have more than 1 person in the world? If YES, then you are not playing a single player game.

As for model, it's fine. Some are better than others. Look at WoW. It is a sub based game and also has micro transactions. It is not just about the model. It is about how it is implemented.

Personally I dont care what the payment model is so long as it's a good game.

Having said that I've yet to see a full on F2P game that is a decent game. But that doesn't include games that started out sub-based and then switched.

SWTOR falls in that category. This game is "okay" but it needs more. I feel Bioware spent way too much effort and time on the voice overs, and story and not enough on developing a decent base game. Things had better change and change soon if they hope to keep my sub past 6 months. The static world and lack of anything resembling a new era in combat and game mechanics is hurting this game more than anything.

Think what you will of some games on the horizon, but Tera has a very fun very interactive combat system. Even GW2 has interesting aspects like combining spells/abilities in combat to change the dynamic. For instance firing an arrow through a wall of fire to create a flaming arrow. These are the things future MMOs need to focus on. Not ridiculous aspects most gamers do not care about, like story. ( I'll admit the story is nice and fun, but that CANNOT be your ONLY focus.)

I'm not saying Tera and GW2 will be amazing successes but at least they have the balls to do something new.
