SW:TOR to have Choreographed Combat | 05.16.2009 , 12:11 AM
I'm sure more than a few people missed this one:

For some MMO players, nothing kills immersion more than the constant reminder that your avatar is a hollow, ephemeral character model, with every weapon strike that passes right through your ghostly form driving that point home. Star Wars: The Old Republic has a new take on MMO combat that should come as welcome news to anyone who faults the way combat looks in most massively multiplayer online titles.

Bioware president Greg Zeschuk has told videogaming247 that combatants in SWTOR won't be 'swinging through each other', largely due to the fact that choreography will play a major role in the forthcoming title's combat system. "Star Wars is choreographed, it's elegant; it's big, powerful moves and lightning bolt flashes, but in a way that makes sense visually and aesthetically. One of the goals we have is to create this choreographed type of combat that looks as though it could be taking place in a Star Wars movie," he recently commented to videogaming247.

Is this a welcome change for you as an MMO player, or is the way avatar combat presently looks in most massively multiplayer titles fine for you?
I don't know about you guys, but I couldn't take another typical MMO combat system. What do make of this promise? How might it work in ranged/explosive combat?

No offence, but this has been confirmed for Bloody Ages™

Choreographed combat is something that should have been expected from Day 1. It's not exactly as if they're going to do a Mass Effect and make it a shooter, now, are they?

Confirmed? Yes. Did people realize? No. Do they continue (and will continue) to say that it's going to be the typical "you-cleave-me-I-cleave-you"-combat of the EQ vein? Yes. People need a source instead of relying on the word of people that have been following he game longer than they, so here it is.

That doesn't say its not going to be. All we know is that it will look different. We have no idea how it will play.

Yeah, what most of us think it means is that when you go into a battle with someone, you will see them blocking and dodging your attacks, but health will still be ticking away. And then for the final attack you'll see your weapon make contact, and down they go. Pretty much what you see in the videos.

I meant visually, heh. I fully expect this game to not revolutionize combat in any form. But hey, who doesn't play a BioWare game for the story? That's what'll have me aboard for a few months, at least.

I wish it were that obvious in the videos. And yeah, that's exactly what I've postulated from the get go. But for some reason, people think that even that solution is implausible and somehow start ranting about how Jedi would be imbalanced if lightsabers killed with one hit...

Exactly. Seems to me like it could mean that when your in combat it just has certain animations going based on who's fighting and maybe some special ones when certain attacks are launched. It doesn't say anything about how it will play.

What? I thought it would be dance fights like in "West Side Story" and

...

I can't think of any other dance fight movies.

Ah ok. I thought you meant that this was confirmation of a new combat system. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No one is saying that it does. I simply said that such a system wouldn't be typical. Only the Matrix Online has attempted this.
