Where did I say I was closed to logic? I said you would never make me see YOUR logic, which is a nice way of saying I don't think it's logical at all.

Neither is particularly selfish. They are simply cases of claiming the right to roll on loot from the boss, which is perfectly legitimate.

That said, many people will be courteous and roll greed in Case A. Many people may roll greed on B too.

If I have no use for something, I am usually willing to give up some of my loot chances in favour of someone that can make use of it. The game gives me that option (to roll greed). Since it is something I don't want, I don't get upset if I don't win it and also don't consider it a great sacrifice.

It isn't selfish to stake a claim to something you have an equal right to as anyone else present. If four of us go into a junkyard and find a car that has a diamond stashed in its dashboard, we all four found it. We all four want it equally, though for different reasons (1 to give to his girlfriend, 1 to sell, 1 to sew into a garment, 1 to put into the pommel of a sword they're making for a Renaissance Faire). So we decide to roll a 6-sided die for it, as one of us has one. We each roll, the highest roll gets it, ties re-roll.

We don't let someone say "My need is more than yours, so you should give it to me!" We recognize equal claim due to equal effort at finding the diamond.

That's what's happening in the game: equal effort to generate the piece from the defeated boss, and thus equal, impartial rolls to determine its ownership.

That's all we're advocating.
Your example is flawed and your advocating selfish behavior. Everyone has the RIGHT to be selfish. The very system of life allows for that. However, it doesn't make it right. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it. There are plenty of things in society that we can do but are considered unethical or in bad taste. Most civilized adults understand the distinction.

When "advocates" such as yourself want something, they will justify why they should have it. They don't care who they step on to get to what they want. As such, there is no reasoning with the "advocates". They have made it quite clear that ultimately they are looking out for themselves and that is all that matters.

While the system does afford that mentality, it doesn't make it right. Posts such as the OP's try to cater to the basic human decency of people. Unfortunately, that is lacking in a large chunk of the MMO player base and it a hopeless endeavor.

I could simply roll need and he wouldn't stop being my friend or anything. If I can show that courtesy to someone that will be my friend regardless, why can't people extend that same courtesy to strangers?

Stop being selfish.
Yes. I agree with you. However, you are probably getting ready to hear how YOU are the selfish one by imposing rules that prohibit the willy-nilly clicking of the need button because they are by-God ENTITLED, whether or not they can actually use the loot.....

But my logic is the way the game is designed. Your way is the way you designed it.

I agree.

But the person I was quoting made the comment about how one way of doing it was selfish. So I was curious to hear which one he thought was the more selfish act.

Show me anywhere in the past 300 posts where someone advocated 'willy-nilly' clicking of the 'need' button?

I'll wait while you look for just one..

Not speaking for anyone other then myself here. But I'd never roll need on an item I couldn't use. I'd also never roll need on an item that isn't an upgrade for my character.

The difference is, that I recognize that an item on my companion can very much be an upgrade for my character. Especially if I already have BiS gear, on my character for that slot.

I agree with this comment.

When do you think you should roll need on an item? Refresh my memory, please.
