I'm really not sure why they didn't make a 'skill based' pvp reward system. DAOC had a great pvp reward system.

Actually combine DAOC with EVE and viola not only do you have a great system, but one that players can really get behind and play for a long-time without feeling they are just grinding out gear, so that it can be replaced by new gear in a subsequent patch.

Imagine gaining access to new skills/buffs/utility as you gain pvp ranks, and once you have access to these you can spend real-life time training them to different levels.

Gear should mean nothing in pvp...and if players need a pvp stat, then all players receive it when they enter a pvp zone/warzone.

Is it impossible to have skill-based PVP for amateurs? Will amateurs just quit with a 1700 rating?

What happened to people PVPing just for fun? Do these people not exist anymore? Or have they completely abandoned MMORPGs?

I laugh at these people who think gear is necessary to keep people playing.

If there is actual skill involved people will play it simply for the gameplay.

Starcraft 2 and League of legends has minimal content compared to an mmorpg, but they have massive followings because the actual gameplay requires skill.

The TRUTH is that gear is an artificial time sink added in because the gameplay itself is lacking. The wow clones including this game do not really involve much more than pressing 1-2-3-4.

People get addicted to mmos and gear progression for the same reasons they get addicted to slot machines and gambling. You get a really good short term feeling of being special when you get a rare drop / win a jackpot so you continually chase that emotion.

Once you can't get it anymore (endgame) you rage at the game for lack of content and finally quit.

PvP'ers (unless you live with Mom) have been looking for this for years. SWTOR is not it.
PvPers like gear progression in the same way that PvE players like it. Do I think a PvP stat is necessary? No. But is gear and progression? Yes.

Lets not pretend that just because you got to 50 late and are angry about not being equally geared with people that have been grinding the system at level cap for weeks, that "everyone" wants an equal footing in PvP. That. Is. Not. True.

People want to know that because they have taken time off work, ignored their wives and children, and cut back on life in general, that they now have the ability to call someone "bad" when they stomp a fresh 50 in a 4v1 fight with their pre-made buddies. It's a matter of pride.

I personally think that gear plays too large a role (NOTE: I am not saying gear *shouldn't* give an advantage, just that the advantage is too large).
TOR's pvp has problems- progression is random, Ilum isn't used and has barely any purpose, exploiters got up there quickly.

However, in time, people will catch up- we will also see changes be made.

It's not really defending their system, it's realizing that mmorpgs sadly all release with subpar pvp systems- and, if you do look at the 10-49 bracket, you can see that when there is balance, the pvp in this game is actually quite fun.

Now, if there were plenty of mmorpgs that had great pvp, competitive pvp and good world pvp systems, it'd be a different story- but the competition when it comes to this genre's pvp isn't exactly stiff- consider the fact that everyone saying this game's gearing/pvp is poor is comparing it either to games long past their prime OR games in entirely different genres.

For those that want to play a moba- go play a moba. For those that want to play an mmo- what are your other options? Rift, which hasn't done gear or balancing any better. WAR which just messed up. WoW- where the 'open world pvp' zone doesn't even force flag you, and fighting in some areas of that zone is discouraged by ultra powerful pve mobs...

Honestly, I prefer the 10-49 bracket- doesn't matter if I jump in at level 14 or 40, it's fun, I feel effective, I get kills and I accomplish stuff- if you really hate the gear grind, join the lower bracket, you can get more than enough pvp there that's fairly balanced- and at the xp gain rate, you won't level out of it for a long time.

So you think rewards should be skill based? The people with the most skill will gain a higher rank and then unlock new abilities, buffs and skills? So the better players will gain access to new powerful stuff while unskilled players will be stuck with the standard stuff.

Help me follow this time line:

1) You want PvP to be skill based
2) You think gear creates an unfair advantage even though it is extremely easy to obtain and everyone has access to it.
3) You suggest creating a system that gives the skilled highly powerful exclusive abilities and skills, while the unskilled or people who don’t start quickly become extremely underpowered.

You just solved your problem by giving it steroids and cutting its leash.

Apparently the only way for alot of players to have fun, is to have a gear advantage over others.

I completely agree, all players should be equal, and we should totally homogenize everyone. There should be zero benefit for playing more than a casual gamer. Not. You people are the reason good mmo s die. The playing field should not be equal. Just bc someone pays 15 a month does not give them rights to be equal to everyone else. At most, a bm has a 15% advantage on you if he is fully geared and you are rocking greens. If your supposed pvp skill cannot help you overcome that, **** and go back to wow.
