You weren't nothing if you didn't have the best. Even a commonly geared person could be a big part of the community and often wanted for groups.

I played EQ1 for 2 years before I became a raider. And I had tells as soon as I logged on to go group in whatever dungeon or zone every single day. You didn't have to be uber geared to be respected and liked. Of course it all changed when GoD was released, and it became impossible to even do the group areas without the best raid gear from the previous expansion.

Now if you aren't all purple you can't even start being someone in an MMO.
This is so true, without gear now you feel like you have zero impact.
If you strike me down I will lose more XP than you can possibly imagine - oh_riginal - SWG forums.

Because of nostalgia.
LOL ya. Led Zepplin is now officially classified as "easy listening" elevator music, and I heard a Boston Pops version of Joplin's Move Over.
Can we please just have our pre-KotFE SWTOR MMORPG back?

Yes, I remember. The world was empty. I remember roaming in swg and never seeing any one for hours on some planets.
Fiery the angels fell; deep thunder rolled around their shores; burning with the fires of Orc

Everquest is going free to play? That is awesome. I still need to max out my level 94 bard and necromancer.

There are things that were awesome about Vanilla EQ and some of the early expansions. There are also terrible things. Things that eventually got changed in the later expansions. Some players can stomach that type of long grinding, a lot of people just can't do it anymore.

Eq1 has mercenaries you can hire now. Double EXP potions. Really good methods of power leveling and more repeatable quests and missions. You can go try and play it in Vanilla mode, but I assure you. You will hire a mercenary by level 25. Grinding Vanilla is *Painful*

No MMO has ever existed as you describe it.

EVE is pretty close. No levels, no grind, you skill up as fast online as you do offline, no endgame to speak of, etc.

The difference is CCP actually tried doing something different and it's great while TOR is the same old thing.

I can't wait for World of Darkness also.

Gonna have to disagree. There are indeed levels; you have to level your skills. There is a grind; you still need to grind your skill levels (though it is nice you can "level" when offline). Additionally you have to grind money and missions.

There are gear tiers, and there is an endgame.

But all of that is besides the point. The point is that the OP was attempting to say that "old-school" MMOs didn't have grind and endgame and gear tiers... which is complete BS.

Ok...So what game currently out there had that "SWG feel"?...As I was thinking about doing the SWG deal (as I've heard so many cool things about it, but by the time I got around to it, it was put offline).

I think it would be interesting to have a do whatever the hell you want vibe, as opposed to the old, and boring, WoW vibe (which WoW and SWTOR have bored me to death with).
If it's dead...I probably killed it...MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Even pretty recent games like SWG, I had a friend who created her own prefession. She was an interior designer. You gave her the keys to your new pad, some credits and came back in a week to a palace. Every room kitted out to perfection...

MMO's used to stimulate so much more than horizonal, linear, reward based mentalities..
Meanwhile in Second Life....
