My companion is part of my character, which I might not use in a FP if there are 3 other players. My blaster is part of my healer, but I might not use it when I am healing a group. Should I not be allowed to roll on blasters?

This is the point that people are struggling with. They are not used to having this level of companion, where they can use the same gear as players.

No-one else has had problems quoting. In fact we one chap quoting 30-40 players here before all in one post, but you're having problems with just one?
Honestly, what is there to add at this point?

Certain folks here have made it clear that they believe anyone should be able to come up with any reason at all to need on anything (because the game allows it!). I won't convince them that there is a different way to look at things (and has been a different way of looking at things for generations of MMOs), I'll just be a different type of player.

I again have to marvel that Bioware did such an outstanding job turning our companions into real people. So many see them as independent individuals, rather than a piece of their own characters. It's really rather remarkable. Since you'd give them "the same rights as anyone else" you'd grant an extra roll for someone who had their companion out if you didn't, right? I'll roll, Kaliyo will roll, you'll roll, and we'll divvy it up for whoever wins.

Anyone who plays considerately will never be able to sway the minds of people like the one I mentioned. Mainly, because they don't care, they are greedy...even in a game where gear and credits are so easy to come by, its crazy that they can't be courteous toward their fellow player for even a moment. They see no problem with that, and I pity them.

You can say I am attacking you if you are of this mindset, and I will say you are trying to rationalize being a douche to your fellow player, because you can.
Ok, so there was one.. Please don't add me nor the others as we have made it perfectly clear all along, while we advocate fairness, in being allowed to use the 'need' button as we choose, does not mean, we always use it.
What is that baseball bat in your signature? Oh! It's a lightsaber! How cute is that !

If they meant companions to be able to use loot, they would have given them slots that accept gear that is acquired as loot, and would not have restricted them to using gear of the same type as the main character.

I'll say it again for you.. We are advocating that we are allowed to choose for ourselves, when to use the need button. Not have you choose for us.

In saying that, I am confident I and the others do use it fairly.

Just be wary, because you may choose to use it when that epic piece drops.

I'll just group with others that play with a more traditional view of NBG if that's ok.

Would you like to talk about "generations of MMOs"? I've been playing MMOs since 1996, with Meridian 59, and was involved in MUDs prior to that. I figure I've earned my stripes in online gaming. So far the only MMOs I haven't directly played have been Lord of the Rings Online, Matrix Online, Star Trek Online and Aion.

In all of those, we didn't have companions who could wear the same gear as players, or gear that was primarily for aesthetic purposes and could have mods slotted in to keep it relevant in a given tier of content. As a result, it makes sense, since we have a new paradigm here, to come up with new rules, yes? Rules that take into account the additional needs on gear that drops? More accurately, the reality that each given piece of gear has a lot more use for a player than if the gear could only go on the character itself.

Yet, we have folks here advocating a system that is more properly contained in the other big MMO on the market right now, where you don't have equippable companions or moddable aesthetic gear. They're advocating an approach that on the surface seems to be for the group's ultimate benefit, but in reality is an attempt to skew things so that they have less chance of being opposed on a roll for something they want.

Care to keep trying? You aren't succeeding so far near as I can tell.
