Damage Meter, how to get if you want?

I like having a damage meter to determine if I am sucking or not. I usually don't care what other people are doing. I like my damage to be visible so people who actually want to help me can, not for people to wave their epeen at me.

But then, I admit I am probably the definition of casual when it comes to playing. I try to play with my friends and guild mates, and we take stuff as we can. We're not anywhere near to cutting edge.

Heck, we even have a healer who we've been playing with since EQ days. She gets us killed all the time. Well, not really. But often enough that it's become a joke that she kills us every chance she gets. As in, it's intentional when we die, not because she sucks. We "obviously" must have done something wrong and made her mad.

We're comfortable with our limitations when grouping with each other. Might have something to do with the fact we've been playing different MMOs together for 10+ years now.

My point kinda wandered, but my point is: Damage meters are much like any other tool ever. By themselves, they are useful when used properly (improving one's spec/rotation or getting constructive criticism for same). When not used properly (epeen waving), they can be horrible, cruel things.

Sure, you can ban damage meters to avoid the epeen waving. Or, you can avoid the epeen wavers, and use damage meters like they should be used.

Here's how I think about it: Knives and axes are really common tools. We've been using them in some form for centuries. They can be used to murder and injure people. We don't ban them from everyday use (except in specific cases) because they are useful.

I feel the same about damage meters.

But with all that said, I don't care if they are in the game or not. I will play regardless and I know that even without them, there is going to be some epeen wavers. Them, I ignore.

People, including me, will complain about anything. If BioWare sent us all $100 in thanks for playing TOR, inevitably someone would complain about how the bill was folded or if it was new enough to include the lastest anti-forgery options. That said, I prefer mine folded in half, and with all the neat bells and whistles.

It was done badly for years. If you're in a boss fight at end game, you have enough to worry about yourself without trying to see who's letting the side down. And just looking at their animations isn't accurate.

Unless SWTOR is taking a giant leap backwards, damage meters are going to be essential for high level PvE content at end game.

True, gone are the days when dpsmeter or recount spam was immediately followed by a spike in threat and subsequent wipe as everybody tried to gain the top spot. For the most part people have learned to keep these out of group and raid chat, even in pugs.
As you say: Long gone, those days.

Actually I have more seen people offering advice to "improve your dps". There's a lot of people who have fun at helping other people. And really, the worst thing I saw is an occasional dmgmeter spam. And as I said - you can block this off using a blocker-addon.

Yes, I also said occasionally to a player in a PUG "your dps is really bad". But not using insults and the second sentence always was offering advice about what to change. Sometimes advice was taken, sometimes "I know what I am doing" kind of reply.

I think people should not be scared about an occasional rude person and get rid of a great tool because of it. Those will happen anyways, with or without damagemeter.

very rare that anything constructive ever comes of this; very few people are willing to help the individual out with sound advice. And when it does happen, and anybody tries to offer constructive criticism, the 'offending' player is usually so burnt out on being trolled that he/she immediately becomes defensive and quits group.
Sorry, I played WoW very actively, and that's ages ago I saw anything like you describe happen.

Ultraxion is a wonderful example of a DPS check and I'm glad you brought it up. The Council encounter in BoT is another, and lets not all forget our favorite Patchwerk. These types of encounters do in fact require all raid members to be maximizing their DPS, as the encounter is mathematically designed to test damage output before allowing raid groups to progress further into the instance.
It is not only interesting in pure single target dps checks. If for example people don't do dmg on the adds at the Cho'gall encounter it is also bad. Or if people are too slow to do dmg on the "Sons" at Ragnaros, this is easily noticable in the damagemeter. And this is something which can be discussed in teamspeak without flaming. Just explaining.

What's the core point for a DPS? It is some specific encounters where he has to do "special things" - and then there is dps.

More accurate would be "it is like a mechanic asking for a screwdriver".

Arent you so cool for blasting people who played some of the hardest pve ever invented the first few months its out before it gets nerfed. You feel big man. Let me guess you were never able to down a boss in the first month it was out. Stop being a tool. Why dont you go play some guild wars because thats obviously the skill level your at. Click to attack and have a bunch of heroes clear stuff for you.
