so based on legacy level when you hit 50 with and alt , why cant we be able to have our other characters be our companions . how cool would that be. i understand it not being allowed pre 50 due to balance but after you hit 50 why not. would promote rolling alts. also let the companion have the gear you earned in his game. i would love to see this in game. Even if its a high legacy level to get. just my thoughts.

ok, so if you did.. how would you control them? where would all the skills go? what ones would auto cast? would they still use the same resources? (and as such would they run out after an ability spam?)

as much as people are saying its a nice idea its just not viable or practical. chars require people to be behind them. think BH. put 2 abilities on autocast and he's be overheated and useless in seconds, plus there are far too many abilities per class to allow you to effectively control both yourself and it. not to mention the ui clutter to show those abilities. ui is bad enough with just yours let alone another classes abilities on show as well ;)

in short, nice idea, just not viable.

Think in opportunities, not in problems. You could standardize some preset abillities when an alt is your companion, playerchoice or devchoice based:)

they could put like a ability bar like the companions have already and say you can pick 10 ability's you want him to use. not different at all to what the normal companions already have. remember this will not effect story line cuz you only can use him or her at 50. once you already have a character at 50. What I have to say to you, kind sir, is Guild Wars. Where, with the advent of Nightfall, you controlled 4 characters at once. If you wanted to micromanage, as some of us did in the Hero vs Hero PvP, you ran all 4 ability bars at once.

These were pre-defined characters that had access to all abilities you had unlocked in the game. Their base class was set, Koss was a Warrior, but you could select their second class, you could make Koss a Warrior/Monk, Warrior/Assassin, Warrior/Necromancer, et cetera.

With some of their later changes, Arena Net added in Mercenary Slots. Where you could make your characters Heroes. You could control 8 of YOUR characters at once. You chose the skills on their bar, if they were autocast or not, the equipment they used, if they were passive/aggressive/defensive.

Now, there is one key different between Heroes and Companions. Heroes used the Energy bar like a player did, they had finite resources. Not an invisibile resource and all their abilities put on a forced cd.

So in short, it's a nice idea. It's been done before. Look into these systems BEFORE you say it isn't viable.

NO!

You complain about things before (ie not enough ppl for heroic when leveling), where is the encouragement for fresh players to play? all they will see is zillions of lvl50s blowing threw the content while they stand there alone and discouraged.

Maybe in afew years, but this is new game, experience it way it was intended roll the alt level it properly.

If I'm not mistaken, Companion skills are pretty similar in effect to PC skills. Take Khem Val. Khem seems to be approximated to a Juggernaut-specced Warrior. Find the mirrored (or similar) abilities Khem and Warriors/Juggernauts have at 50, and bingo, there you go.
