WoW is the only other MMO I played, so I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore mmoer or anything. But having played since release I remember what it was like when it came out. MUCH different than it is now.

At release, wow had no:
Warzones (battlegrounds)
Open world pvp
Valor (honor)
LFG system
Cross-server anything
Faction balance (still doesn't really)
UI customization
Quest objective help
Chat bubbles
...and numerous other things that would now be considered standard.

Now SWTOR has released with many of those things, along with FAR greater stability. Was it released with all of them? No, but only within the Blizzard development team is it known for sure whether some of those things were an actual improvement or not. There were droves of people crying for NO LFG system prior to launch because it "damaged the community" or some such thing. Now those folks have fallen conspicuously silent, and droves are crying for a system.

Bioware is not privvy to all of Blizzards trade secrets. It's their first delve into the genre, and it has gone WAY better than Blizzards. Just like Blizzard did, Bioware will constantly improve upon the game. I'm confident we'll see a LFG system (a better one) before long. This dev team will learn its own trade secrets, and eventually polish out all the bugs/imbalances that are present.

The bottom line is this game in its release state is head and shoulders above what WoW was in its release state. I can't wait too see what they can do with it with a couple years of iterative improvements, as the other game had.

It's already pretty awesome, and it can only get better.

Swtor doesnt have to compete with what wow had 7 years ago. They have to compete with what wow has now!
That being said I do not expect swtor to have 7 years of content.
I do expect swtor to have the same ease of access to game play that wow AND other games do.
Swtor is missing common mmo tools.
The ui customization
The lack of lfg system
The lack of target of target window
The lack of add on support
The lack of macro system
The lack of graphic settings
The lack of appearance system
The lack of dye system (some thing wow does not have yet but others do)
The lack of using mission items from the mission tracker

What y our saying is that it would be ok for a new TV manufacture to release a line of TV's with out remote controls because so many years ago TV's didnt have remotes!

I know i would be highly upset if i bought a brand new 50" TV only to open the box and find no remote. Instead a note that says hey we are new to making TV's and will are looking into making remotes available some time down the road.

WoW absolutely had open world PvP. The games' zone design forced oppossing factions to come in to contact with each other all the time and capitol cities were able to be attacked. You could also go to their newbie area but just not kill anyone unless they flagged for PvP.

You can't act like its just a feature that needs to be added. Most of the planets don't allow you to come in to contact with the other faction and when you do...its highly limited and not because your quests and theirs brought you in to contact (Like they should.) Then all they need to do is run to their gold-platinum PvP 50 guards that are everywhere to further hinder any open world PvP.

WoW launched with better level design and appropriate level guards. Bioware can't just patch this as a feature...they would have to change their planets and quests to bring the factions together. It's bad level design which makes me question why we even have PvP servers.

Theres's a new LFG tool on the test server. You won't be getting an appearance tab, their choice. Same goes for the dye system, only thing we did have was the colour matching thing which I don't know if it's coming back or not.
I don't know where they are standing regarding macros and add-ons.

This is a great game in my opinion, I enjoy it alot, but would even enjoy it more if server merge's came or that Moderaters/GMs would actually reply to this, or anounce something atleast. I'm playing on The exile's crsytal pvp server theres 65imps & 51 rebels online at this moment and its prime time, so pretty much dead . And yea people can reroll true, but some people want to do this, others don't and this sucks especially when alot are rl friends.
Its like continue and get bored maybe quit, or reroll and don't play with youre friends anymore on other servers. And don't come with pve content, or datacrons and all, becouse most of that is all done, as said we enjoy the game but ilum is empty as hell, warzone's is fun but not when you meet youre own clan 5times minimum an evening well with or against.

Why does SWTOR have to compete with anything? If it's not fun, well, don't play it.

My question to this is, what wonderfully enjoyable MMO's are people playing today that SW:TOR needs to be better than?

I mean, I get WoW had the competition beat on release, but what is SW:TOR even competing with? What is this market it is up against, because frankly, I think MMO's are pretty stale currently.

Personally, I think the MMO market is struggling, and lacks many decent enjoyable titles, but from this argument coming up again and again, I feel like folks must be playing MMO's I've never heard of.
Agree. Rift was a great game at launch, it was what I think WoW 2 would be like. I was bored after a few months though.

I never saw TOR as anything more than a money grab on EA's part, it was clear from the get go it would do nothing to push the MMO market forward.

I am hoping GW2 can deliver on all it promises, same with Planetside 2.

Soon your all going to have to have an internet id card so enjoy our discussions while it lasts.

I like this game. There are areas of it that I feel are creatively successful. At the root of all this are we wanting SWTOR to kick the hell out of WoW or WoW to be better? Do we want SWTOR to have more original options in game play or to copy WoW? At some point do we need to let go of WoW and just move in our own direction as a community. I think with the community now at a subscription phase these topics are productive and help nudge the game into a better direction. The success for SWTOR is the community now that the game is released.

Maybe the game will be higly successful in like 6 months. In its current state ? Not by a long shot.
Hard mode: Play Republic
Nightmare mode: Play Republic on a pvp server
Are you man enough for the challenge ? Aunt Satele wants YOU.
