I stand corrected. You're absolutely right that there are 8.

More equals better in terms of longevity of the game and variety. After playing through the Agent's story, it's going to be hard to switch over and try the smuggler because it's the same core class mechanics. Though it's going to be a new story, actually playing will get old quick since it's like starting the agent all over again.

It just would've been nice if Bioware didn't copy and paste the classes from one side to the other.

Can the same be said for companions? Does the Commando start with a healer companion (ala Mako)?
The companions have the same roles in the same order for each mirrored class, but they have different abilities.

That's not true, though. For first companions: Jedi knights get T7, a tank pet while Sith Warriors get Vette, a DPS companion. Troopers get Aric, a tank, while BHs get Mako: a healer. Some mirror, but it's not all of them.

The thing to do in this case is to pick different advanced classes to make it feel different.

If your IA goes Sniper, make your SM a Scoundrel. If your IA goes Operative, make your SM a Gunslinger

Ranged Cover vs. Melee Stealth (or even heals) is certainly different enough.

When it comes to gameplay, you will love commando.. Yes.
But there's the chance that you really do not like the animations and story.

Just one correction: Aric is a dps, not a tank (though he can take it with the best of them at lower levels).

Oh, is he? My scoundrel's never had to throw out a heal for him so I just assumed he was a tanky sort, lol.

He just built trooper tough.

Warhammer online had some bigger differences between its mirrors and all it lead to was massive whining. Kind of weird since its focus was pvp.
Haggis Mmm good.
