Not immediately no. But once they are in, developers will have to start designing content with them in mind and eventually they will be required...sooo, no.

you are likely to have people assuming you are part of the problem. I myself am FOR damage meters being allowed in-game, but I can CERTAINLY understand the sentiment of those who DO NOT wish for them. It's people like you who get rabid and start screaming at how badly they suck and in general making assumptions about them.
I still don't see your point. How is it "making assumptions about them" if they consistently pulling low dps (assuming they have decent gear)? Do they lag really hard? Are they distracted while playing? If it's one of the above, then they shouldn't be playing and wasting others' time. If they are just new and don't know a good rotation, I will gladly help them out. I constantly help newer played in WoW with their rotations and gearing to improve them. But, like I said, without a DM, you can't even identify those in need of help, because nobody knows if they are doing anything wrong.

Damage meters are the first step toward the people with more ePeen than skill gaining the upper hand. Again -- when I have to be geared better than gear I can get in a Raid to join the raid, then the system is borked.

Having participated through NM raids, I'm thinking if you're still wiping at this point, you're just all pack of bads. We've (the community) cleared almost everything without any tools to speak of at all (except Soa, but he's buggier than an ant nest, so no surprises there).

If you're a bad, and can't put together a competent group, just simply go back to playing Normal Mode and find other bads and tell yourself you're a "leet". I promise everyone will be laughing at you.

Meters in good hands means better overall progression for the group
Meters in bad hands means they have epeen stroking sessions.

heres the kicker, you can choose who to group with.

Summary: Dont group with jerks.

It's not about being kicked, it's about people showing off with their dps stats. A dps tool can be a nice thing, but you're letting something loose in the community, that will have a big impact on how people experience dungeons.

But if the argument is "I can't see my own dps, so I don't know if my rotation is right.", then people should be given the chance to monitor their own stats. There is no need for them to see the dps of the other group members, if all they want do to is see if they're doing everything right.

I've never seen how they can be a necessity, if it's for bragging rights, then they're just silly, if they're for avoiding aggro, just experiment and learn to sense when you're about to pull aggro from the tank.

Really, MMOs should be more about fun and less about crunching numbers.

You might say with damage meters people will abuse them and kick some poor soul for doing just slightly less dps than everyone else. But WITHOUT some way to track who is doing the worst, you simply have to guess and possibly throw out baseless accusations.

Would you rather be kicked for actually being the lowest performer or because someone guessed you might be?

Damage meters provide a great tool for guilds who are recruiting new trials etc. If you are a Merc and come in and are doing much much better than say the guild's current Mercenary, they might actually give you a spot in raid. Otherwise you may join a guild, run a few times with them, and they might simply not find you as funny as the other Merc is. So they sit you, having no idea what you can really bring to them because you might be a quiet person or not super funny. Or perhaps you suck but they sit their current Merc because they are guessing that the reason they got that recent boss kill is they switched you in. The other Merc just can't understand why and nobody can tell him with any certainty whether or not he wasn't pulling his weight.

Do people seriously want a game environment where each guild has to sift through hundreds of players hoping and guessing to put together a good raid team that they are actually certain performs through rigorous trial and error. But whoops, someone quit, gotta go play the guessing game again. Maybe this actually sounds good to you, enjoy wiping and having no idea why.

I think this whole debate comes down to which is the lesser of two evils. I feel more tools for players is always better. Just because you're afraid of how someone might use that tool doesn't make the tool evil or bad.

Unfortunately jerks rarely reveal themselves at the start they usually wait to do something childish like wipe the group if a dps or leave in an emo fit if a healer or a tank after the pull is made.

Hey everybody,
I would also like to know my output dps, but do I really want this? Do we want this to become WoW? in WoW, everybody knows best rotation, exact dps it should give, in party mission who hits hardest etc etc...

I dont want to SWTOR become WoW, so that tank will 'exit location' with words that he has highest dps, we damage dealers suck and he is leaving. It will be only about numbers... Seriously, you, who played or still plays WoW, do you watch game itself, or do you watch your dps metter and be happy to be on the top of it? Did you never post to chat list of dps because you were first?

In a city, fleet or somewhere like that, there could be something as training ground, with some mobs. Let players to attack it for 5secs for burst damage, 60 for continous, 3 mins... and then tell them their dps, so they can test their rotations and improve themselves.

WoW become strange game, PVP is ONLY about equip, everybody has their dps meters, and no one is really enjoying the game itself, only the numbers (still, it runs great in Battlegrounds :-P), which is the reason many people stopped playing it.

I dont want this to happen to SWTOR too. And now stone me :-P

But some people's fun IS crunching numbers. That is why I am all for a personal meter or a combat log that people can write out of game parsers for.

People can compare personal meter information with each other to better their rotation.
Ops leaders can use parsers to figure out what the crud just happened on that boss.

It is a win/win. The only people that don't win are the epeen strokers. and when someone tells me the above options are not good enough, it tells me what that person really wants the meter for.
