I was wondering why hutts are so powefull? How did they aqquired such influence? They're just fat slimes and can't fight.

Brains beats brawn.

I imagine they're smarter and wittier than other races, so they're able to effectively lead cartels and gangs. They're also slightly more reckless and deceiving, generally speaking.

They are actually far more agile and good in combat in their younger years, this is when they gain their immense power. Over time they have such power and wealth, they don't need anything else they use others to do their bidding.

Like the above people sad, they are far more agile in their yonger years and are just smarter.

Also, their lifespan is just way longer. If they started low in a gang, after a while they would just outlive everyone.

Also according to most "extended universe" sources hutts are almost impossible to kill as they can survive almost anything (blaster shots cant penetrate their thick skin to damage vital organs, they are immune to all poisons, they can fully heal from almost any wounds and so on). This means that other criminals can't just murder the hutts to take over their organizations, because all attempts to assassinate a hutt usually fails.

Of course this is contradicted by the movies when Leia manages to kill Jabba the Hutt quite easily and strangulating him with a chain kills Jabba in a few seconds even though wookiepedia claims that hutts can hold their breath for many hours.

So go figure. There is no real answer to anything about anything.
