Just gonna say this, and I do not want to get into a debate on authors and their views of the world.

I like Ayn Rand.

That being said, i am not a duplicitous dunce; i actually have a sense of collaboration.

That will take a while to spread, though. Someone who has one jerky character might never notice the effects. However, if you have enough characters and your legacy name starts showing up on the list multiple times, people might notice.

Also, if you're in a guild, someone can go to your GL and tell them that you're being a jerk. By agreeing to join a group like a guild, your behavior reflects on everyone in that group, and sometimes that group doesn't care for the reputation you're getting.

Yup and when people are LFGing for a long time they are sure to check these "blacklists". Also if no one agreed to your rule set before hand, go ahead and report me. I did nothing wrong. Feel free to leave group, kick me or whatever and inconvenince 2 other people for a bit of gear you'll replace soon anyways. Clearly there's a number of people like me and with all the people wanting cross server LFG it'll be even easier to group.

I ‘like’ Ayn Rand, her novels are fantastic. Her philosophical views are intriguing but she herself warped them and turned them into Machiavellian nonsense rather than ‘rational’ egoism. However, as you said, this is another topic.

It is, indeed, entirely the responsibility of the players to agree on loot rules. If none have been agreed to, well, you can't really expect people to know yours beforehand. This isn't some other game where it's a very simple question, there's several different kinds of rules people may have.

Why should it matter if someone else minds? Why are your wants more important than person X's wants?

I have no problem with someone rolling for the stats of the item, as long as noone else minds. Or even if they do mind. Same goes for looks, or companions. Or whatever. They were there, they contributed to the kill, they're all equally entitled.

Because I'm not selfish enough to think that I'm somehow more entitled to the item than anyone else is...
It really depends on why someone minds.

"and if he didn't"

If he didn't, the person who needed the loot would have likely won it? Sounds like a good thing to me. Lets not invite that guy to any more of our runs.

There's such a thing as morality here. Just because you're a jedi or sith who wears medium armor doesn't mean you can go ahead and roll on a medium armor with cunning on it if there is a person in the group who benefits from using cunning and needs it themselves. It's selfish and will cost you in the long run to replace all the mods when you could get one very easily with strength mods from completing a heroic.
[PlayerX]: Wasn't numb bum in return of the Jedi?
[PlayerY]: no you mean nien numb or something like that hehe
[PlayerY]: nien nunb
[PlayerX]: Ah that wa sit

The issue with making a moral appeal is you can't get consensus. Different people approach "morality" from different directions, particularly as it relates to video games. At the end of the day, the only fact that every player can rely on is this: the system uses Need Before Greed, and if someone rolls Need, the system lets them. You can't appeal to "should" or "<insert bad thing> happens if you do!", all you can appeal to is what will actually happen. Threats of blacklisting don't hold water because it's applied intermittently at best. The forums here would have you think that if you look cross-eyed at another player, you'll be blacklisted by them, the other 2,000 people on the server who are their friends, and each of those friends' entire guild rosters. I don't think that's the case; even if two guilds manage a 100% guild roster blacklist of a given player, that player will still not lack for finding groups to run content with, so the penalty is ineffective at best. If anything, the people who spent the time to blacklist the player were more inconvenienced due to the time it took to type out their name on an ignore list.

Don't deal with what you hope will happen, don't deal with what you think "should" happen, deal with what will happen, and that reality is all you can rely on. Item drops, someone needs it (regardless of their stated or unstated reasons), and they'll stake a claim to it via Need roll.

Getting bent out of shape doesn't do you any good, and doesn't affect them at all.
