The alternative of insta travel makes the game world feel really, really, small.

There might be a happy medium, but Bioware hasn't found it.
All of those starport hallways and hangers act as a cheap timesink that do nothing of actual purpose.

To hell with Starports and Profession Hangars and Orbital Stations and Ship.

It's boring and stupid.

There, I said it.

If, for some reason you dissagree, thats your right. Personally, I think your nuts.
You do know on EVERY planet there's a shuttle that takes you directly to fleet? No walk to ship. No load to ship. No 3 second hyperspace travel. Just a quick BAM I'm there. Then on top of that there's the fleet pass.

Just saying...

There are some quests happening in that middle point from the elevator to the ship.

SI --> Dark Skotia meeting
IA --> Some Kaliyo conversations and an affection quest

Im sure the rest of classes had something similar to those 2.

Its called RP.
Dont know why anyone has not petitioned to remove workstations since are useless except for RP, and its 1 object more in the world the game has to load.

Oh yeah because it's sooo painful to run a bit and be in a social setting to get to your mailbox. You know, might as well put all the trainers and all the NPCs on your starship so you never have to leave it.

What's wrong with you guys? Everybody knows this type of laziness kills a game, ESPECIALLY THE MMO PART.
Ok, I think putting mailboxes and everything on ships is a bit lazy, but cmon man, you cannot say you enjoy the 3-5 loading screens just to get from one planet to another. There is just no sense in it.

I think it might be boring for now, but worth having them. It leaves open possibilities for additions like encounters and quest hubs.

I sort of agree, I just dont understand the need of the complexity...Could we just have 1 hanger with all the ships or just eliminate them altogether. Surely people are smart enough to find their own ship

My load times aren't that bad and I'm only running a 2.66Ghz Quadcore, 8GB and a 7200RPM hard drive. I bought this system a little over two years ago and have only upgraded the video card.

If your primary hobby is MMOs and you're load times are long enough to make you upset, then perhaps you should upgrade your system; at the very least buy one of the smaller SSD drives and put your two most played games there. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Since my load times aren't that bad, I don't really notice the pain of running back to the spaceport. I also use my Fleet Transport when I plan on crafting, GM, or running flashpoints.

If you want to argue that your ship should be able to pick you up, then one could also argue that planetary regulations, especially on Imperial planets, make this illegal. I can see how you'd allow smugglers by default or make a quest to allow people to do this. I'd agree with it then. If our characters are as important as their story lines appear, then yes, we should have some sort of pass so our ships can pick us up, especially at level 50. If the devs enable this functionality, they'll also need to explain it somehow via a story, which is what BioWare is great at doing.

I agree with this completely. I think the ship are pretty cool and could possibly be an avenue for something down the road. However, I do think that EVERYONE should get a "fleet hearth" or whatever you want to call it that has a long cooldown.

The Orbital Stations in particular are the biggest pain in the behind when it comes to prolonging travel times. Nine times out of ten, they're nothing more than a superfluous airlock that serves to bring you two more loading screens before you actually get down to the planet.

The other 1/10, there's a cinematic or a quest chain that is equally as superfluous, boiling down to "Hey, stuff is going down on the planet, go talk to this guy."

They're obviously a lazy fix to not having to design actual hangars on the origin planets, as well as planets like Taris (Imperials) and Quesh.

So in the end, we have to pay the difference in convenience by hoofing it across a useless zone that should just be a 5 foot long tunnel with a door at either end, but is instead a pointlessly large atrium that is nothing more than a time sink.

It's probably the most glaringly poor design choice that exists in the game.

I'm not necessarily for insta-port travel to your ship on demand, anytime, anywhere. But you're putting your head in the sand if you think it's a good design choice to sit through 4 loading screens as you travel from Taris to Quesh while also having the opportunity to watch your character take minutes to autorun across the lobby to the elevators where another short black-zoning load awaits, followed by another sprint to the ship where a longer load awaits.

Well that's great for you. Thanks for sharing your unsolicited specifications with us. That helps the discussion immensely.

It's not about performance. It's about smoothness of design. The Orbital Stations as well as many areas in between your ship and the planet are 99% useless, dead-zone areas that have zero functionality.

I don't know about you but I like being able to have a friend ride shotgun with me on my ship or I on theirs. Damn that IA ship is smexy.
I find it funny no one has a problem standing around waiting for a boat to the other continent or the super long flight from one end of the continent or the other but they get to jump on their ship anytime they want and fly for 3 seconds. The only wait is a 30sec-2min load screen depending on your system and they cry?

In some games you travel for 10 min on the boat one way and there is only 1 boat so when you miss it you got to wait for it to travel 10 mins one way, wait to load passengers and 10mins back then wait for it to leave again to wait 10mins while you get there.

Yea walking through a spaceport is soooooooooo long.
