Normally I roll need for my main unless I don't need anything from that instance for my main. then I will have something for one of my companions that I am after. If that is the case I will of course speak with the group before we start and let them know that I am not rolling on gear for my main but for one specific companion. If they have no problem great. If they do either I or the person upset by it can leave and find another group.

However it also behooves the group leader to mention his prefered loot etiquette to the group before they start the mission. That's just good leadership.
Mal - Define interesting.
Wash - Oh God. Oh God. We're all gonna die?
Mal - This is the Captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence. So we may experience some slight, turbulence...and then explode.

Well then I have no problem with that. As long as everybody knows and people aren't "stealing" other people's gear then it's ok.

Did you companion contribute to the kill? No?

Then stop being greedy and stupid.

Wait people actually roll need for their COMPANIONS?!

The things you can only use solo, only have one of out at a time, and deal maybe 1/3-1/2 of the damage/healing of a player character?

Oh lawd

You can't steal something that isn't theirs yet. You don't have a right to anything until you win the roll for it.

Doesn't matter about the companion. He was there and contributed and has a right to roll. You stop being greedy.

It's never a problem if theres for example more than one consular and a piece of light armor drops.
They will all roll for it, and one of them will get it, even if it would have been a bigger upgrade for someone who lost the roll.
It benefits all of them, some more than others.
This is exactly the same as rolling need for a companion against that consular;

They will all roll for it, and one of them will get it, even if it would have been a bigger upgrade for someone who lost the roll.

According to your logic though, it is okay if a jedi guardian who is also in that group rolls for it as well because its an upgrade for one of his companions that he doesn't even use 95% of the time.
Yea, it is an upgrade even though its very very small, so it's perfectly okay do this?
Certainly; it's OK for both consulars to roll in your example, and that's exactly the same situation.

I play the consular; I'm not going to object.

You cant possibly believe that...
Why not? How are the situations different?

In one case, someone gets a smaller upgrade over someone else who has a use for the item. In the other case, someone gets a smaller upgrade over someone else who has a use for the item.

We had a good system in place, because being able to need for your companion when no one else in the group needed the item was great, but since people abused this system by needing for companions over the people actually helping in the group, Bioware is being forced to police us and make a change.

Sorry, but if I tanked an hour long FP and I'm lucky enough to have a nice tank piece drop from the last boss, I should get that piece of loot over your companion. Your companion didn't tank the boss, I did. Call that entitlement on my part all you want, but it's a real poor move to thank me for helping out in the group by pulling a move like that. And trust me when I say, it would be the last time I'd ever tank in a group that had you in it.

Companions don't make good replacements for players in groups at higher levels at all. With that being the case, why should they be wearing that shiny new boss drop after the FP while the player that you actually did need leaves empty handed?
Agreed. If people are really so concerned about gearing their companion as effectively as possible, they will have a crafter make them the purple letter gear with Presence on it. I read about this the other day and tried it when I got home as I could make an implant (X2) with presence. These two implants made more of a difference in my companions performance than any other gear I have equipped him with. And since he gets my hand-me-downs, he has some not bad stuff. I am having an armormech friend work on a set with presence on it now. Somehow if you equip them with presence, it stacks back to you. This makes sense to me because really who is going to wear presence gear themselves? And the stat says it increases the effectiveness of your companion, and we are their companion too so that's why it's a shared stat I guess. I dunno from theorycrafting, but try it yourself with a piece or two and see the difference.

I truthfully don't have a problem with people needing for their companions, as long as that's what their doing. I think the problem is becoming that people are needing everything because they know that if they don't they won't get it, because someone will say its for their companion.

I ran into this type of situation yesterday my Sniper was in a group with two Assasins and a Sorcerer. During the mission a Sniper Rifle dropped and everyone needed it. The Sorcerer won and when I asked why the others needed they said it was for their companion. I later found out that this was BS because the Inquisitor doesn't get a companion that can even use a Sniper Rifle.

I say just be polite and if you're going to roll need for something for your companion, ask the others if its cool first. However, it would be nice if Bioware made it so that you could trade these types of items to others in the group. I know I've accidentily needed on things that I didn't really need for the character I was on.
