After getting Corso and Bowdaar, I find that I lean towards keeping Corso around. This I think has a lot to do with whether you're Scoundrel or Gunslinger. The scoundrel me thinks Corso's harpoon is useful to get back shotgunning in, and I've found that his range is convenient to keep damage constant while I'm operating at melee range. I use a lot of stealth-tranq openings, so I keep Corso's grenade throw off.

Bowdaar IMO is better suited for gunslingers; for me, his wookie toss can ruin my attacks up close, and his roar breaks tranquilizer stuns. OTOH, I imagine the roar is quite useful for gunslingers who can pick off the targets around Bowdaar from afar while he maintains threat, particularly saboteur types, plus 'slingers don't really care if the toss whacks enemies a little farther away. Corso tends to stay around you rather than charge in because he's got a gun, which keeps melee enemies uncomfortably close for gunslingers, plus the harpoon is the exact opposite of what you want him to use.

I actually stopped using corso or bowdaar entirely. Once I got Risha, she did my tanking (I play as a scoundrel). I barely have to heal her. And since I got Akava? I'm dropping gold elites of my level.

Thanks for a great sticky - just after I got Bowdaar I came looking and found the thread. I'm currently rearming him as recommended.

He has gear favouring endurance but I'm assuming this is a waste of time and replacing it with STR gear (and so reducing END) won't harm his tanking ability. Is this correct?

Before that I only had 1 or 2 fully geared but once I got above 40 I had all of them geared equally thanks to the PvP Armor and that really helped when I started doing quests again.
My tip ....

There is also decent PVP gear at level 20 if you've earned enough Commendations. Implants are especially useful and it means you don't have to humiliate him with your spare (stupid looking) hat.

well, if you want Bowdaar to tank then yes, it will hurt him. He is a tank, ALL tanks want endurance, defense, and shield. Str only makes him hit harder, not live longer. If your a scoundrel, you can get away with reducing his endurance, but your going to be healing him a LOT more.

On the subject of +aim for the main stats....it doesn't really matter that the stat is called aim....they could have called it tiddlywinks for all that it matters...as long as you STACK tiddlywinks, your gearing them properly. Yes it sucks that there aren't aim hilts, but since she is heavy, you can put trooper armor on Akaavi it does have aim stats.

Armstech can make some awesome techblades for your companions, I have some armstech people in my guild and they keep me in blue and occasionaly purple weapons for them.

I had leveled way past the 20's gear on my Scoundrel before even realizing there was level 20 PvP gear. You are correct though, it is a decent alternative to getting him some cheap gear right away.

As for Str/End...

I generally focus on the +End with mods or I take mods that are around 50/50 between Str/End.

The answer's no. The less Endurance he has, the less HP he's going to have to absorb damage. Giving him more Strength increases how much damage he does, so he'll generate more threat and kill things faster, but I've never had much issue with my companions generating threat so much as them surviving said threat. If you want him as a meat shield, he should have high Endurance, heavy armor, and be in his threat-generating, shield-boosting Guard Stance, with a shield generator equipped. You should be looking for equipment that boosts his defense rating (chance to block/dodge), shield rating (chance to activate shields), and absorption (amount of damage shield absorbs).

As a scoundrel, I have to highly disagree with the "Corso = Single Target" comment. He tanks aoe fine.. you just have to either tell him to go use EMP blast on the group.. or stealth him into the middle of the group so he uses it. The grapple thing is useful at times, but more of a hindrance all the time.

I don't understand why there are labels for Single-Target tanking and AoE tanking for Corso and Bowdaar, respectively. They can both do each fine, you just have to adjust their behaviors based on the circumstances. Though, yes, Corso is a ranged tank and Bowdaar is a melee tank. That is a better distinguishing factor for them. This should be the most accurate description of the Smuggler companion roles:

Corso: Ranged Tank
Bowdaar: Melee Tank
Risha: RDPS
Akaavi: MDPS
Guss: Healer

Akaavi requiring +Aim is solely because she's a Bounty Hunter (Trooper mirror). Each class has a primary stat. For Bounty Hunters, it's Aim. Giving her +Aim will increase all her damage, all around. +Str is useless for her, so don't bother.

I haven't gotten far enough to have all the companions, but for Smugglers, it actually seems quite flexible in comparison to other classes. For other classes, you know who you are going to take around, and that's for all the time. For BH, you just take Mako from Hutta, SW you take Quinn from Balmorra, Sages take Qyzen / Sorcs take Khem. I like the possibility of variation, though it does make gearing a nightmare. Best thing I can suggest is to run the appropriate FPs and get orange drops for your companions that need the gear, especially when leveling since you can just use comms to upgrade them as you go. This is super critical if you're taking Corso/Bowdaar, since they're the most gear-dependent as tanks.

I use Nadia on my Sage but that is because my Sage is a healer like my Scoundrel (different servers) so I tend to use DPS companions. If I was a DPS Sage I would use one of the tanks...

Each type of character/class is going to find they need different companions. I was just trying to outline the differences between those companions but I am sure, as time goes on, we will find different ways of using everyone.

I have a lvl 46 Gunslinger and have found that using Guss has allowed me to take down Gold/elites of equal to =1 lvl pretty fun. Guss is also a pretty fun companion to have around.
