They are similar in overall capability but differ in flavor.

Both have solid DPS and an in-combat 60 sec CC and heals and a castable shield and knockbacks. Both get a first companion that complements them well. Both have the option of focusing on DPS or heals or some hybrid of those. Both are ranged classes.

Differences include: only Sorcs get interrupts; BHs wear Heavy armor versus Light for Sorcs; BHs get AoE out of the gate, Sorcs have to spec to get it; the default BH attack is ranged, but melee for Sorcs; Sorcs have a simple but less flexible resource system whereas BHs have a tiered system that is more limited but also amenable to micromanagement.

These two ACs are definitely among the better soloers (though, of course, any class if well-played can solo quite effectively).

The biggest style difference is whether you or your companion are usually tanking. In most cases, the BH will be tanking with the companion supporting, while the Sorc will support/DPS while their companion takes the heat. Granted, either of those can spec such that they reverse that: a BH can go full heals and use a later companion to tank, and a Sorc can go full DPS and draw aggro and run with a healing or DPS companion. But especially early on the choice would be whether it is you doing the tanking or your companion.

Both can roll down a hill! *though a bicycle is more tricky*

merc is pretty boring. tracer spam.... and then?

healing is more fun but incredibly easy. i spend most time in FPs just auto attacking tank and waiting for something hard to happen

Merc gets a hyperactive little Java tank as a companion. That should sway you
