This thread is my scrapbook for ideas that I'm playing around with as I develop characters and work out mechanical designs for a comic I'm working on.
Sneak preview of two panels from the first issue:
Character designs:
Tenjin Yao (Jin for short)
An Atrisian Jedi Knight. Atrisia (aka Kitel Phard) is home to the Yovshin Swordsmen, the progenitors of Jar'Kai dual wielding technique. Not quite finished.
Some, but not all, of the considerations that went into designing the look of the character:
- Atrisia has an imperial culture which I would liken to the most ancient Chinese dynasties or the Mongolian empire, cultivated from birth. It's briefly mentioned in Labyrinth of Evil, and I thought it'd be an interesting background to explore. I was originally going for Echani, but that one IMO gets overplayed.
- I'm going for a mix of robes and armor where the armor is only for protecting vital spots.
- Tenjin is mediocre when it comes to the flashier aspects of the Force, but where he shines is insight. He has a very sensitive precognition. He relies on the finesse of feeling exactly when to unleash an ability rather than powering through by brute force.
- Tenjin is dedicated to solely practicing Niman for its adaptability. He hasn't fully mastered it yet, but he is a fast learner. He has proficiency in Jar'Kai, but prefers the efficiency of a single saber.
Originally, he was going to have a
somewhat ornate, antique-looking lightsaber, but after thinking about it, the hilt was just too artistic for the simplistic elegance that's part of Tenjin's character. So instead, the hilt design was further refined:
Jin's saber
In designing a more austere, practical weapon, several considerations came into play.
- Tenjin was fortunate to salvage a small amount of lightsaber-resistant phrik alloy from the aftermath of a ground battle against the Sith Empire as a Padawan. The alloy was fashioned into the emitter shroud and stabilization ring housing, to prevent sun djem attacks that would disable and destroy the saber. The shroud also helps to designate blade facets for attacks and parries.
- To facilitate the use of the fingers to help generate cutting power, ergonomic grips were needed. Slanted cushioned rings were used to help with the proper forward grip.
- Activation stud, blade power adjust, and blade length adjust are all conveniently next to where the thumb or index finger can quickly reach. This helps with rapidly changing tactics on the fly without sacrificing proper grip.
- A maintenance latch in the middle of the hilt makes accessing the focus crystals very easy to do, as well as for repair and modification.
Kayrani Sha
Miralukan Jedi Consular, Tenjin's former master.
- Miraluka are typically shown in canon to be hooded, but it'd be a waste to not let that backlit hair shine (haven't gotten to that part yet).
- Kayrani would be considered a TK/melee Consular. She's got light armor underneath her attire, and the soft fabric of her sleeves and "dress" helps to emphasize her grace. The many folds of her clothing, which easily catch the wind, can help to accentuate her actions, whether it's in the middle of melee combat or unleashing a Force Repulse.
- If Tenjin's costume motif is blue and metal, Kayrani's is white and earthen shades of brown. This is also an offhand way to reflect their personalities in what they wear.
