Their engine was good at release. Their backend stability was not.

I dare say the inverse applies here.

They are using such a heavily modified version of it that it is considered home built. They used the frameworks of the latest revision and then began restructuring that straight from the ground up. There are very few remnants of the base engine itself, to be honest.

Oblivion and many other games use Gamebryo. It's rock solid.

When has blizzard ever had the ability delay problem? Maybe they foresaw the problems and built their engine to handle it?

Well, whichever the case, props to them. I am a big fan of Rift's engine myself.

I played Rift till I had full Rank 8 and some hammerknell gear and yea, that game runs rock solid.

If only we could combine RIFT's gameplay with SWTOR IP and artwork.

They likely bypassed a huge amount of work by choosing Hero Engine package which then allowed them to focus on the game rather than the engine and networking mechanics - not that those two weren't overhauled too. Budget is a completely different monster and plays a large role in choosing an engine.
Hey, it's the guy who took the time to express his point in more than one sentence, in contrast to me. All excellent points. If Bioware had made their own engine, we'd probably be seeing "SWTOR: Coming Spring 2013." Crafting an engine from scratch is a gigantic undertaking.
