Troopers, I'm pretty sure, are mirrors of the BH
Rocket Punch may be the only melee "type" of move we have, but we do have a lot of melee "range" moves which is what this discussion is about. Flamethrower, Flame Sweep, Heat Blast, Flame Burst, and Quell are all melee range abilities. Also, Rocket Punch should be a very high priority in your rotation... It does good damage and it procs your Ion Gas Cylinder if specced in your skill tree. It's VERY useful, not just "nice."

Vanguards and Powertechs, as well as one companion for each class, are referred to as ranged tanks simply because they use ranged weapons.

While it is possible to kite a mob around with ranged attacks and sort of tank him at a range, the basic premise of these class will still involve being in the bad guy's face. You are still going to want groups to cluster on you so you can hold aoe threat.

Against a single target that is also ranged, yes I'm sure you could both trade fire from 30m away and tank him that way. But there is no particular advantage to it and you don't get to use some of your good abilities that way.

There are no ranged tanks. Troopers and BH have guns, but you'll be pretty much right in the faces of your enemies.

So what I've gathered is it's still semi melee, but less melee than Jugg. Thank you all for your help

Calling a PT a ranged tank is like calling a Jugg a ranged tank. Force Scream, Vicious Throw, Force Choke, and Force Push are 10m. Saber Throw is 30m.

And not using a tank-specced PT's best single target TPS move just because its melee is ridiculous. It sets up for a Rail Shot too. Not to mention their interrupt is also melee.
