The SWTOR Duelling Tournament

“Who will be the winners? Who will be the corpses? Audience, place your bets!”

Welcome everyone to the SWTOR Duelling Tournament, an idea inspired by a tourney on Comic Vine that I thought it a good idea to replicate here. The premise is simple, you the competitor will choose a team of two to four combatants from anywhere in the Star Wars Universe to duke it out in an elimination style tourney made up of 1 v 1 brawls.

The course of each round will run as follows:

Stage 1: The Debate

In this first and primary stage of each matchup, it will be the role of the competitor to provide opening arguments, analyses, rebuttals etc. altogether make a convincing argument for why their team will win. Note that as a strictly 1 v 1 phase between the two competitors, we’d ask you refrain from posting your own arguments until this stage is over – though making corrections/pointing out the facts is acceptable.

Stage 2: The Vote

The second stage commences when the Arbiter decides the debate has run its course, at this point spectators will be able and be encouraged to provide, if they so wish, a detailed analysis/personal verdict on who they think will win and why based on the arguments made. Note at this stage the debate is over, so no rebuttals.

Stage 3: The Decision

After taking into account arguments made by both competitors, and the personal verdicts of spectators, the Arbiter will then make an informed decision on who made the most convincing and meritorious argument.

And on that basis they will announce the victor, who proceed to the next round.

With that explanation out of the way, let’s get down to making your team. Teams will consist of two to four combatants, no more, no less. You will be given a maximum amount of 100 credits to spend, with each combatant being given a value. Below is a tiering system to help you work out how much each character costs, but values will ultimately be verified and decided by Myself, Aurbere and Selenial, who make up the decision making Council.

It is not necessary to spend the full 100 credits, and for some combinations may prove difficult, however do you best to spend as many credits as possible to ensure you have a well-balanced and suitably powerful team.

Balanced Combatant: A balanced combatant is someone who both excels in melee combat and the Force, without concentrated focus or deficiency in either. Below are some examples and their values:

50 Credits: Darth Vader, Revan, Darth Krayt

45 Credits: Exar Kun, Jaina Solo

40 Credits: Count Dooku, Darth Malgus, Mace Windu

35: Credits: Meetra Surik, Darth Maul

30 Credits: Satele Shan, Shaak Ti, Darth Sion

25 Credits: Asajj Ventress, Aryn Leener

20 Credits: Quinlan Vos, An’ya Kuro, Luminari Unduli

Force Combatant: A Force combatant is someone who specialises and excels in Force-based combat, but is comparatively lacking in melee abilities. These characters cap at 30 to reflect this deficiency.

30 Credits: Darth Traya, Barsen’thor, Darth Nox

25 Credits: Inquisitor Jerec, Darth Zannah

20 Credits: Savage Opress, Aleema Keto, Bastila Shan

Lightsaber Combatant: A lightsaber combatant is someone who specialises and excels in lightsaber combat, but is comparatively lacking in Force ability. These characters likewise cap at 30 to reflect this deficiency.

30 Credits: Lumiya, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Sora Bulq

25 Credits: Plo Koon, Vodo-Siosk Baas

20 Credits: Qui-Gon Jinn, General Grievous, Pre Vizsla

Note to determine if your chosen character is a 5 crediter, e.g. 25, 35, etc. decide if they are more powerful than say 20 credits, but less powerful than 30. Players can also choose non/minor Force sensitive who do not wield lightsabers, all and any such characters – e.g. Jango Fett, IG-88, Kir Kanos – are worth 10 credits.

Example: Team Beniboybling

Count Dooku: 40 Credits

Darth Maul: 35 Credits

Savage Opress: 20 Credits

Total Amount: 95 Credits

Finally, before you choose your team, be aware of the following rules:

  1. The following characters are not permitted: Luke Skywalker, Darth Sidious, Yoda, Darth Plagueis, Vitiate, Darth Caedus & Mother Talzin, nor any entities e.g. the Ones, Nihilus, Spirit Vitiate and Spirit Exar Kun.

  2. Only characters with decently comprehensive info on their abilities are permitted. It will be down to the Council’s discretion of who these are. Note that this includes all those among the Ancient Sith.

  3. All permitted characters are in considered in the prime of whatever iteration has been chosen. Different iterations e.g. ROTJ Luke, Vader/Anakin are permissible. Note however Jacen Solo is not permissible.

  4. Ensure characters mesh well together, as morals and personality traits will be applicable. Though note all combatants will be 100% prepared to kill and that surrender or retreat is not an option.

Please post your prospective teams and credit scores below, if the Council believes your credit scores need to be revised, they will confer in private to reach a decision. Also for everyone who wishes to participate, please make sure you will be avaliable to do so over the next few months, we'll do our best to work around you but unlike in the Kaggath it is up to you and you alone to debate for your chosen team, and so your able participation is vital.

So without further ado, let the team making commence!

Hmm, I think I know what I want my team to be, though, since I am sure only 1 of each character can be chosen... I will list what I had intended to use, and then another one that is only characters not chosen yet that will most likely be used.

One with already used character

Darth Vader - 50 credits

Inquisitor Jerec - 25 Credits

Savage Oppress - 20 Credits

One with all free characters

Darth Vader - 50 credits

Inquisitor Jerec - 25 credits

General Grievous - 20

Though, some characters that could be considered for the list:

Darth Marr

Boba Fett

Lord Cronal

Canderous Ordo

Desann

Krell

Unfortunately teams cap at 4, so an entire team of non-Force sensitives would be possible. :(

Also nice suggestions Sil, just to note Desann would probably be a 20 credit balanced combatant, so that's an idea.

@Karadron, I got your PM, those choices are AOK so I'll add that to the list.

I never got to reserve a team, sucks that I lost my entire team already :(

I'll get back to you in a while I guess, taking the scrappy characters hasn't exactly stopped me in the other tournament.

I thought I'd leave this link here for anyone looking for a small taste of what this tournament could be like however, we've personalised it but the idea came from a tourney over on Comicvine; http://www.comicvine.com/forums/battles-7/sw-beyond-the-movies-r2-selenial-vs-thevivas-1681870/

Kind of curious... But what was your original line up? :D

Most excellent, I'll just make sure to check with Aurbere and Sel about Desann before putting in however. Though I doubt there will be any problems. Also, you may which to bookmark this for future reference. :p Edited by Beniboybling

Kreia, The Exile and Shaak Ti. I'd discovered a few things in my ComicVine hunting that would have allowed me to use Kreia with The Exile quite happily :D

Next time, I guess.

Edit: Drain is banned, for Traya by the way.

:( Well you were supposed to have first dibs but I didn't think you had a lineup yet.

That said you still do so I'm sure some... alterations can be made. :jawa_evil:

What did we decide on different iterations of characters? I take it Kreia isn't different enough? :D

Also, what Revan is Aurbere going with? Darth or Shadow of Revan-Revan...

I guess what I'm asking is if we're allowing two different iterations of a character in the same tournament.

Interesting... If I use that in combination with my own Jerec thread, he has quite a bit to draw on. :D

Also, I saw that comment at the bottom. You bet I will bookmark that and make use of it!

She's probably not. :o

Revan Reborn I think.

As of Rule #3 yes, like Anakin/Vader. But Kreia/Traya? I think they might be too similar, I mean Kreia was just an alias.

Then again, Kreia didn't use any dark side powers until endgame. :mmm:

I was thinking more along the lines of Revan to be honest, though that could be a tad unoriginal for me :D

Interesting... Aurbere, care to clarify? You know the massive problem with your team if you keep it like that, I won't hold back :jawa_evil:

Figured that even though I said this in the Kaggath Thread, it belonged here much more... Not meant to be arguments for my team... But I am still in Kaggath Debate mode! (I mean, my closing argument was around 4k words, and only 6/14 of the way done when it was posted... Time limits, eh? :o )

Even at 25, Jerec is quite a steal worth vs cost wise. That said, the 25 is well deserved due to his noted weaknesses. Though, his strengths do help balance them out. I might argue that Desann should be 25 instead of 20 though (would just make my team 100 instead of 95) because not only is he quite good in saber combat due to his style and unique characteristics, but he is also smart. While inferior to Jerec, it isn't actually by all that much. Different strengths, different weaknesses.

The part I love about Desann, is that he is not only a Saber Brute... He is a SMART Saber Brute with some dark side powers that usually only Sorcerers possess.

I will say that Darth Vader, Jerec, and Desann should work very well together. From the Kaggath it is easy to see how Desann might be sub-servant to Jerec (and understandably why, consider how he references Jerec in his appearances) and while Jerec had planned to usurp Vader, he was respectful enough to not do so openly. So while Jerec and Vader may not be best of buds, they are definitely on the same side in regards to these battles.
