Need Help Choosing Next Class To Play!

I've got a level 50 Shadow, nice and dandy, but I'm not really comfortable enough with the play style to do end game. So I want to try to get an alt up and replace my main in the future, but I'm really unsure of what to play. It preferably needs to be Republic unless the Imperial one is just THAT good. (I've already played 2 chapters of an agent and will get back to the third eventually.)

So here's what I'm thinking:
  • I need a class story that has some interest to it but doesn't need to be spectacular.
  • The end game potential has to be decent in PVE prospective obviously.
  • Combat can be anything but I'd prefer not being stationary or having it complicated.

I've also got the legacy buffs from the Smuggler/Agent and Consular/Inquisitor so they are not priority unless need be. I'm not really interested in the Jedi Knight since the combat isn't hugely appealing and I've had difficulty leveling solo in the past with surviveability.

I've lined up the pros and cons as followed:

Sage:
  • [Pro] Ranged Casting (My Preference)
  • [Pro] Healing
  • [Pro] Decent Surviveability & Utility
  • [Con] Already Done The Story
  • [Con] Companions are *Meh*
  • [Con] Already Have The Legacy Buff

Gunslinger:
  • [Pro] Great DPS
  • [Pro] Not Done The Story From Taris and Up
  • [Pro] Already Sort Of Started
  • [Con] Locked Into DPS
  • [Con] Stationary Cover Needed
  • [Con] Story Isn't Too Important On A Galactic Scale (Big Problem Personally)
  • [Con] Already Have The Legacy Buff

Scoundrel:
  • [Pro] Healing
  • [Pro] Not Done The Story From Taris and Up
  • [Con] Already Played An Operative
  • [Con] Combat System Is Complicated and Annoying
  • [Con] Story Isn't Too Important On A Galactic Scale (Big Problem Personally)
  • [Con] Already Have The Legacy Buff

Vanguard:
  • [Pro] Minor: Tanking (I'm not too fond of it's an option)
  • [Pro] I Like Lightning (I have a Sorceror on hold on another server)
  • [Con] Done The Story Up To Tatooine And Heard The Story Isn't That Great After Act 1
  • [Con] Companions are about as dull as the Consulars TBH
  • [Con] Combat - How Does This Work? (Also how's Assault Specialist?)

Commando:
  • [Pro] Ranged Casting Sort Of (I prefer the Sage's to the Commandos)
  • [Pro] Healing? (Is this broken as I've heard?)
  • [Con] Done The Story Up To Tatooine And Heard The Story Isn't That Great After Act 1
  • [Con] Companions are about as dull as the Consulars TBH
  • [Con] EXTREMELY Stationary Combat

A second perspective would be greatly appreciated. I just can't seem to decide. I'd like a Sage but I feel it would be just a boring repeat of boring and I don't know if I could get my character up all the way. At the same time, a commando looks decent but it seems like it would suffer from the same symptoms.

Well unless there is some upside to the commando that I've failed to forsee, I guess I'm going Sage.

If you already did the Consular story on your Shadow, why don't you just go Sorcerer instead

Never played Republic Char's. Except my Trooper (Level 5)

Sith Warrior story line is good mate. I have a 50 Juggernaut and a 50 Sorcerer. I prefered the Warrior's story line.

Its not late to turn to the Dark Side!

Here are my thoughts.

The Smuggler Gunslinger
It's a great story, the best one I've seen in the game so far and in my guild, people made a few slingers just to try it out and they're liking it a lot.

You said you didn't do the storyline up from Taris. I can tell you that you missed the real good part of it... it's only after Taris and the ending of chapter 1 that the story of the Smuggler really gets cool.

The class is a real good DPS indeed, I have a 43 gunslinger (and started a scoundrel a few days ago, it's level 14 --- just because I loved the storyline a lot) and I was working on the "Sharpshooter" tree, but since 1.3 I respec'ed my tree to "Saboteur" and this tree is a beast in DPS, the last option, the Incendiary Grenade is wonderful to DPS large groups of enemies. In PvP it turned out a great ability... just wait that amount of jedis and siths to gather up stabbing each other and then throw an incendiary grenade on them and watch the show!

The storyline may not be too much important if you think in the galaxy as a whole, since smugglers are independents, but as I said above, the storyline is really cool, specially from Nar Shaddaa and on.

The Smuggler Scoundrel
As i said above, I already have a 43 gunslinger and I'm loving the class, that being said I made another smuggler and turned it into a scoundrel just to fight in a different way. I'm still thinking about working into a hybrid (half healing tree, half scrapper tree) or only choosing one single tree.

The Trooper Class
I played both advanced classes before, a vanguard up to level 36 and a commando up to 45 and I gotta say... besides the cool look the class has and its equipments, the storyline IS NOT that cool as you already said it.
I ended up deleting both toons due to the fact I didn't like the storyline very much.

Now, besides my 43 gunslinger and 14 scoundrel, I'm also playing with the Imp. Agents, I have a 25 sniper and a 13 Operative that I like a lot, specially the Operative due to the looks of the class and the assalt rifles.

Maybe, in the future I make a trooper again, but I'm still thinking abou it.

I vote Gunslinger or Vanguard

Gunslingers are slow going until about 30+ and then they really pick up as far as mechanics go. Definitely a late bloomer class. The story is decent, but I guess you are right in that it's not hugely important in the grand scheme. The dialog and the companions are all actually pretty hilarious though. I have 4 50s and this is easily my favorite set of companions.

Vanguards are one of my favorite classes. They're absolutely solid at both DPS and tanking. Very few class flaws mechanically. The story sucks (according to my friend) and the companions aren't all that hot, but I've honestly found that this bothers me less and less the more characters I have. I'll always be more connected to my first because of the novelty of it and I took more time.

Neither one are considered underpowered or FoTM atm, which makes you stand out a little more. If you go the Commando route you lose a bit of that edge.

I just maxed out a Commando and regarding your likes/dislikes I would totally avoid it.

It's a walking turret tied to a concrete wall (even snipers have more mobility). Healing isn't that bad but IMHO not as good as what you can find in other classes.
If you do PvP (I did level my toon 95% this way) you have flashing lights advertising: [plz gank me plenty].

The story isn't that bad but for getting 2 of your companions you have a copy paste scenario. It gets old fast.

I like the droid companion but as with the narrow minded BioWare way you are stuck with playing Elara if you want to max out your efficiency as the's the only healer of the group. However I found her better than Quinn that I can't stand anymore.

If you really want to play a Tropper, I'd suggest you to go Vanguard, unless you are a masochist like me

Well I found someone to level a Sage with, so there's that. As for starting a new solo character, I'm thinking it should probably be Vanguard.

Commando is terribly stationary. While I like ranged casting, I don't think I can deal with this kind of thing.

I already have an Operative and I didn't really like the Scoundrel's combat. Heck I don't really like the Operatives too much either but it is better visually than the Scoundrels IMO.

Gunslinger isn't that great since it's only DPS but it's there I suppose.

Vanguard doesn't seem to have any obvious mechanical flaws other then I need to figure out how combat works.

Now I would play much sorcerer if I wasn't leaving it on hold until I can get the transfers straightened out (I want to put him on a different server). The only reason I have my operative is because of HK-51. So until I can get my sorcerer transferred, Imperial characters are pretty much out of the picture.
