NPC limit, why?

Why is there an NPC limit? dont get it, should be able to use these like any other?
i have this wonderful casino table i cant put anyone around...
would like to have all active companions around the plannings table, cant.
just silly little things like this...

Remember that the NPC limit applies only to the NPCs that are selectable targets, which is mainly companions and vendors. So while you can't have all your companions placed in your stronghold, you can have all the Republic/Imperial guardsmen, twi'lek dancers, and Massassi Guards that you want.

Both very good responses, i had missed the one on performance issues and didnt actually realize there was a difference on the others.

One other thing, I was told animal mounts such as Rancor if used as a stronghold deco count towards the ncp limit, so if your showing off mounts, might want to move out animals.
