battlemaster has set bonus in the shell, not the armoring piece, so if you dont use the ORIGINAL (not crafted) battlemaster shell, you lose the set bonuses.

 

Crafted shells contain no set bonus, you need war hero tier armorings or better to get your bonuses back if you use crafted shells.

There is now. We've learned that 1.6 will get rid of the BM vendor so the crafted BM Gear will be the only version still available. Hopefully they'll at least keep the schematic boxes.
