On blasters...

A blaster bolt can be deflected by a lightsaber.

Assuming a blaster bolt works similarly to a lightsaber, it also cannot penetrate certain materials such as Mandalorian Iron or Cortosis.

A non-direct hit from a blaster bolt is usually not fatal, as evidenced by Leia getting hit and it's 'just a scratch'.

When hit in a non-vital part of the body, say, an arm for instance will hurt, however the wound will immediately cauterize and does not cause bleeding, so a wounded limb is therefore not fatal.

Blaster bolts are easily discharged by shields. Apparently these shields are easy to make since every Droideka has it's own, not to mention every Bounty Hunter running around with one.

Now, considering all this. Why the **** doesn't anyone use good old gunpowder.

Blasters don't run out of ammo.

Or gunpowder weapons were never invented in the starwars universe.

Or if they were invented it would be very hard to find the weapons, and ammo, and reloading would probably get you killed by other weapons that don't need it.

Blasters can fire thousands of shots, while gunpowder weapons would run out of ammo pretty soon.

Also blasters can apparently penetrate various forms of armor that would be bullet proof.

but about that

Why the **** doesn't anyone use good old gunpowder.

Actually they do

and some such weapons even appear on the movies

Blasters don't run out of ammo no. They run out of energy though, granted after many more shots than the average breech loading projectile ever could, but this energy is still their ammo. In the EU games (In TOR itself) this happens. And in terms of non energy based projectiles it's highly likely a bullet would be destroyed by the consistent high output energy that a lightsaber puts out. If they can slice through a door they can melt a bullet. Yet again if a lightsaber can't penetrate Cortosis a bullet wouldn't be able to either. Edited by sambeta

They exist, but are very rare. Jix used slug throwers on people who used rayshields. He carried one blaster and one slug thrower. Read Shadow Stalker. :)

they do use them. Mainly primitive races and Jedi Hunters. But yeah Blasters are inconsistent as far as damage goes and they never seem to be that accurate. I just assumed because they are incredibly cheap to make it's easier giving your military of several million people a weapon that is cheap and never needs ammo.

"Because it's Sci Fi and Star Wars isn't about Logic, otherwise there wouldn't be any sound in the Space Battles and X-Wings and Tie Fighters wouldn't be as maneuverable in space."

Actually blasterfire can pierce Cortosis (After a few shots), and depending on the blaster, like Han's Modified Blaster which can blow chunks out of a hanger wall, it can pierce Mandalorian Iron and a Lightsaber can cut through Mandalorian Iron, it just takes a few whacks before it does anything.

Also I think a decent explanation is because they have armor that's usually tough enough to deflect rounds like that. Not to mention there are also droids running around a lot of which have reinforced frames that can withstand bullet fire pretty well, while a well placed blaster bolt to the head unit can fry it's circuits.

Also...if we can consider the Jedi Knight Series guns Canon, they still do use Non-Blaster type weapons like the Golan Arms Flechette Shotgun or the Imperial Repeater it's just their rare.

Because brightly colored glowing blaster bolts look more pretty than bullets.

This is actually the best, most logical reason.

But there's no practical reason why guns, or some sort of "slug thrower" type of weapon wouldn't be just as effective as any Blaster. For example, slug-throwers could use a wide range of ammo types, held in different magazines; Acid, explosive, Armor-pircing / Discarding Sabot, High-Impact (HESH, High Explosive Squash Head), HEAT / Shaped Charge, High Explosive Anti-Tank), etc. Just pick the type appropriate for you target, and kill it. Make the slugs out of a ferrous metaL, and propel them with an electromagnetic field (rail-gun).
