I've been having a hard time deciding which stronghold location would be best for a republic military base style stronghold. Anyone have any ideas?

Right now, the popular choices for military bases seem to be Tatooine (which, admittedly, is where I've located "Havoc Base") and Alderaan, since Tatooine is mostly underground and in the cliffside and Alderaan's building looks like it could be a fortress.

It also depends on whether you're after a "forward base" type of thing, full of soldiers and ready to defend itself, or an administrative "rear" base like the Citadelle in Lille. The Citadelle is an old 17th Century star-shaped "bastion fortress" that's still in military use, although these days it is the HQ for a NATO Rapid Reaction force, and the interior doesn't have that "ready to defend itself" look at all.

 

For a *Republic* "rear" base, Coruscant could work in a pinch. What I wouldn't recommend would be any of:

* Nar Shaddaa(1)

* Rishi

* Dromund Kaas(2)

* Umbara

* Manaan

 

(1) In a "deeper" war scenario, sure, people put "forward" and "near-forward" military bases almost anywhere, but I don't think SWTOR is in that situation *yet*.

 

(2) Likewise for an Imp base in Coruscant, of course, although I'm minded to think of Darth Vowrawn's exploits on Corellia in the SW story.

Overall, I'd say that, from a tactical viewpoint, Tatooine makes the best military base. It only has one major assault vector from the desert, and is therefore easier to defend.

To some, Alderaan looks like a fortress, but it has approach vectors at the front and rear. It would be my second choice.

Umbara might be interesting as a military train/base, but .. 😒

 

The rest are either too much in the midst of civilization - such as Coruscant, D.K., Nar Shadaa - or they're too 'open' like Rishi, Yavin, Manaan.

Contrarily, if instead of an obvious "barbed wire and guard dogs" military base, you're wanting something more covert, like for the Special Operations team that Havoc Squad is supposed to be, then Manaan (which, according to in-game lore implicates is a formerly-abandoned, now reclaimed surface installation) could potentially work....

 

Maybe Nar Shaddaa too; I mean, part of the Trooper storyline involves visiting an Imperial base hidden in one of the casinos, so a Republic base on Nar Shaddaa hidden in a 'Sky Palace' would be about even with that...
