I just started a Seer Sage, healer, and wondered with all the choices now for companions (ie: Qyzen, Nadia, Shae Visla, Niko, the Twi'lek Pirate, or even HK, etc.) which is the best one for leveling, and late game content. Also should i set them to full on DPS or tank modes, I found one article on companions, buts its last post was in 2013, and it talked about gearing the companion which i know is no longer an issue.

All companions have the same stats so pick any of them and they will work the same.

 

I'd set my companion to DPS as a sorc as you have good survivability with your own heals and you can kill things quicker with a DPS companion.

At the top of this forums parent forum is a stickied post with a detailed analysis of companions, up to date through 6.1.2d. It's pretty hard to miss.

For pure DPS, Shae is definitely much better than others. With her, it should be possible to breeze through as a healer.

This. Shae's dps if far and away better than any other companion, followed closely by comps you won't get as a consular until well after you finish your class stories. Set her to damage and watch enemies melt!
