TITLE: Belsavis Breakout

HOST: Alpha Company and The New Era

WHEN: January 23rd, 9pm EST

WHERE: Belsavis

WHAT: World PvP-RP "King-of-the-Hill" battle event

OBJECTIVE: Collect the most points for your faction to win!

DURATION: 1 hour

POINT OF CONTACT: 1SG Kjvago Mahr, Hrokkvir/Thrivaldi, Violet-sky

IC:

Attention C.I.A. Personnel:

The following alert applies to any and all assets operating in the Belsavis system. Intelligence from a reliable source indicates that the Sith Imperial collective known as the New Era has been staging troops and materiel in preparations for an assault on the Tomb prison complex. Sources indicate their goal is to liberate the Seneschal Hrokkvir from the penal colony. A third party has alerted the Republic's 203rd Legion to the oncoming assault, and both sides are preparing for combat.

All agents are advised to avoid contact with the warring parties at all costs. Any uniformed member engaging in combat or otherwise violating our neutrality standards risks expulsion from the Academy. Reconaissance may be permitted for approved specialists, providing safe observation distance and/or stealth proficiency standards are met. Speak to the Headmaster for further details.

[OOC]

The New Era under the leadership of Thrivaldi is attacking Belsavis in order to free Hrokkvir. Alpha Company will be there to stop them. The C.I.A. will be there to act as referees and determine the winner.

The Event:

This will be a WPvP event on Belsavis. It will be a "King of the Hill"-style event with two hills.

Win Conditions:

The Factions will receive a point for every minute they control a hill. Whoever has the most points by the end of the time limit will be considered the winner. This makes for a total 120 possible points (2 hills X 60 min).

Hill Control:

A hill may either be controlled by a faction or contested. Both hills start the event as contested hills. A faction may capture a hill by placing a visible character inside the borders of the hill (the referees will not be able to see a character holding a hill if the character is in stealth).

No matter how many characters another faction places inside the borders of the hill, the hill will not change sides unless all characters of the possessing faction are outside the hill's borders or dead.

Hill Capture:

A hill may be captured by killing or otherwise removing all characters of the opposing faction from within the borders of the hill and placing a visible character of your own inside the borders.

If during the assault of a hill, the defending faction has a defending character die at the same moment as a new character enters the borders or they have been pushed back right to the edge of the borders of the hill and are weaving in and out of the borders or in some other way it is difficult for the referee to determine whether a capture has happened or the defender is still just barely hanging on, then the referee may consider the hill to be contested and award no points to either faction until a clear possession can be determined.

Referees:

The <C.I.A.>/<Chorba Intelligence Academy> are a neutral party and will be acting as referees. They will be taking time, counting points, determining hill possession and at the end declaring the winners. Before the event begins they will be identified to each faction by their guild tag and uniform. Deliberate attempts to attack or mislead the referees will be penalized.

Winning or losing determines what information your faction possesses in character after the breakout.

Hill Locations:

There are two hills, the first is the Bridge at (X: -860, Y: 445) in High Security.

[DECLASSIFIED]

AFTER-ACTION REPORT

Strike Team(s): N/A

Members: N/A

Mission Status: N/A

Summary:

Prior to the Academy’s hiatus during Operation Mitosis, the composite organization known as The New Era of the Sith had been flagged as an organization-of-interest to the C.I.A.—records indicate their classification alternated between ‘client’ and ‘enemy’ depending on the day, it seems. The New Era once waged a brutal war of conquest across the galaxy before their leader Hrokkvir was captured over 5 galactic standard years ago. The Republic’s 203rd Legion, better known as Alpha Company, oversaw prisoner transport to the Tomb facility on Belsavis, as the unit had been deployed frequently during the New Era’s campaign, counting the defeat of the war criminal among its finest accomplishments.

When the 203rd learned of the upcoming attempt to liberate the Seneschal, the troopers leapt into action, calling for reinforcements and scouting the Maximum Security section of the prison compound for strategic defense locations near the prisoner’s cell. Intelligence gathered from both the field and trusted assets indicate that the New Era was lead by a Sith warrior known as Thrivaldi, confirmed to be Hrokkvir’s nephew. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that the New Era has been experiencing some sort of infighting of late; it is unknown if Thrivaldi’s goals were to unify the New Era or to wrest political power for himself.

The opposing forces brought similar numbers to the battle and both sides fought with ferocity—however, ultimately Alpha Company and its allies successfully fended off the Imperial attack. The Republic victory has been attributed to a number of factors, including home field advantage, preparation time, and a disciplined training regimen. The New Era, on the other hand, experienced occasional communications blackouts on the Republic-controlled world, and likely a lack of cooperative combat training since their victory at Coronet City. Some C.I.A. personnel suffered minor injuries as a result of their proximity to the fighting, but no major casualties were reported.

OOC:

Another fantastic WPvP-RP event we had the pleasure and privilege of assisting in! With an estimated 30 players attending from both factions, we were happy to lend our neutral hand.

Final scores:

Republic: 55

Imperial: 11

Victory: Republic

Scores were calculated based on the rules outlined in the previous post. Referees subtracted 15 points for intentional referee-killing (5 points per ref death). Each time the player was warned that if they did not stop attacking, points would be deducted. Whether or not the player was actually a part of the event or trolling it could not be determined nor controlled. Another referee was attacked, but not killed—no points were deducted for this incident. In the long run, the penalties did not have a prominent effect on the outcome of the battle.

At some point it was observed that Imperial players gathered just outside one of the hills, but did not actually place a visible character inside the hill’s boundaries, therefore did not accrue any points.

Special thanks to Alpha Company, the New Era, and the Seelund Cartel for organizing the event. Stay tuned for the next one!

First a thank you to everyone that came out to fight, both Imperial and Republic. We estimate that there were around 70 individual players fighting on Belsavis last weekend with the numbers slightly in favor of Republic who had somewhere above 36 players versus the Empire with somewhere above 30.

BIG thank you to <Chorba Intelligence Academy> for refereeing the event, not many guilds would be willing to sit out of the fun and just watch like that.

In Character Consequences

Republic: After the battle, the security staff in charge of Hrokkvir’s containment went to check on him, but when they arrived at the containment unit it was empty. An alert was sent out that Hrokkvir was free.

It is clear that since the battle proved a failure for the New Era, Hrokkvir must have been freed before the attack.

Since The New Era still attacked, they must have been unaware that Hrokkvir was free.

Based on this we can infer that there must be a third party at work.

Imperial: The New Era retreat from Belsavis, their mission a failure. They are unaware that Hrokkvir is free and have no reason to suspect a third party.

Things we learned as organizers

Shard lockout is still an issue - After our last event had severe lockout problems we considered making this event happen across two planets and were for a long time talking about using four hills across Belsavis and Section X. We reconsidered this after many Jung Maians left the server in the time between our last event and this one and went with just Belsavis. We were wrong. We know of at least one person who experienced lockout and was unable to join the event, there are likely more.

Lag is still an issue - The design decision to split the event across two hills was with the intent of limiting lag from number of players on screen. I think this was successful to a degree. We still had some complaints, but lag is unavoidable in this game. The complaints were mainly from people unfamiliar with world PvP who were playing on higher settings. World PvP requires you to turn your settings down as low as you can. I’m not sure that splitting the event further would have added value when you consider the increased complexity, travel times, and that part of the fun is getting those large numbers of players.

Splitting the event had unexpected positive consequences - Splitting the event across two hills made the event remain engaging for the losing side. Despite being outmatched in the score, the Empire was able to make successful assaults on individual hills and have a fun back and forth. If the event had only featured one hill, the Empire would likely have been throwing themselves against the defenders fruitlessly and become demoralized. This proved more engaging for both sides as the Empire could have small victories within the event and the Republic had to work to maintain possession of both hills.

Moving Forward

The direction the story is heading in dictates the nature of the next event in the series. The way the event will function means that we will need a strict cap of no more than 24 Republic players. As such the next event will not be posted on the public forums and will be recruited for by word of mouth instead in order to preserve this balance.

We’ll be sure to make the next event after that a larger scale one again where everyone can participate.

I think the numbers where much more skewed towards the republic than stated. From what I remember our ops group only had around 24 on imp side, and the pub side seemed to double us. Talking with players with pub alts seemed to confirm this (with one sanct player telling me pubs had around 50-60).

This may in fact have been the case. Not to take a cop-out route, but we did at least use the word "estimated" in our review. Although the nature of the event made it difficult to track accurate turnout, it at least was clear that the Pubs outnumbered the Imps in this case.

As KJ mentioned, moving forward we intend to limit the number of invited Pub characters for the next event. But hey, who knows? If the Imps are hurting that badly, there's a chance we Filthy Neutrals might have to lean to one side in order to maintain the balance.

The 36 is based on one 24-man group composed of Alpha Company, The True Republic and Marine Expeditionary Unit. And one 12-man group of Sanctuary. I don't know if Sanctuary grew past that during the event, but that's the number I was given by Nivhawk when they arrived on planet.

That number isn't counting any independent players who may have joined which is why based on the 36 and 30 number I estimated the total number of participating players to 70.

And the 36 is excluding any random questers leveling or the CIA referees who might skew the number of players given by the /who list.

30 Imperials is based on an estimate given to me by Sanctuary the second time you took the bridge. This was about halfway into the event after NERD RAGE took the field. You were definitely smaller before that. And I don't think NERD RAGE joined the larger ops group, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here.

Another thing that might make Republic seem larger than it was is that the 24-man group holding the Comm Tower primarily was rotating about half the group back and forth from the Tower and Bridge based on where our scouts saw you moving to attack.

The 50-60 number is probably based on the /who list which is not an accurate measure of participation. If it was, then either number would indicate that the Sanctuary group was a full 24-man which I doubt or there was a third group, unrelated to Sanctuary, holding the Bridge with them which I doubt again.

i realise it's likely from the /who list, but even still, it wasn't even close to being even. that's at least 12 extra players for the republic. so take your victory with a grain of salt. :p

I've heard good things about Nerd Rage. Don't worry, almost everything I do in this game is past my own bedtime--I'm sure we can set up future events that begin an hour or so later.
