I believe that originally you had to get the item in a raid, then reverse engineer the item, and then learn the pattern that way. How is this pattern learned in the modern game? Short answer: It's not. Long answer: Back when 4.0 was released they removed the ability to RE operations dropped color crystals. Furthermore, they also removed the ability to RE GTN purchased stuff including color crystals. IIRC, The "Eternal Championship" offers purple color crystals. The Eternal Championship (AKA: TEC) is a daily area. You fight different bosses in an arena. You have to have completed the Knights of the Fallen Empire (KOTFE) story to participate.
