Swoop racing/event discussion

Couldn't find a thread that actually discussed this, so I made one.

I, for one, am pretty underwhelmed by this. I know, my mistake was having too high expectations, or maybe any at all. But surely they could have done better than simply auto-driving mounts (in the same slow speed) with a few abilities for things to do along the way? We're not even racing against anyone else. Hell, a reskin of the on-rails space missions would have been better IMO.

Luckily for me, there doesn't seem to be anything worthwhile at the reputation vendors either, so no reason to grind it.

Underwhelming.

And if you start on Onderon with the gang that has the objective to toss some bombs using a targeting circle while controlling the speeder and blowing up fireworks, you'll probably cuss like a drunken sailor.

Won't bother.

You tell me. I'm trying to complete the perfect achievements, you need to blow up 15 things for this one and I can't find more than 14. I must have done 2 dozens of runs and even a couple of trials with brakes on to have time to look around Still can't find the 15th one.

I miss Dulfy.

Did you get the one above and the one below near the beginning(1), and the one up high about half-way down the tunnel(2)?

And re: Dulfy... Does Vulkk have a good guide up yet?

(1) You take the first jump up onto the mushroom(3) then up the ramp onto the little elevated road, and there's one down below to the left in the canyon and one up above ro the right trying to hide under the edge of the first turn.

EDIT: The one below is bugged and sometimes blows up the one above instead. END-EDIT.

(2) Very easy to miss since it's up high on a mushroom(3).

(3) Sorry, this event reminds me a great deal of Mario Kart, with the bouncy mushrooms as platforms.

I find the whole event really underwhelming. The whole design seems to me really bad. The whole impression of using racing speeders is totally opposite to impression of using normal speeders. It lacks smoothness, it's clunky and the overall controll is somehow "strange" at least and some design decisions (using ground aoe for attacks for example) really doesn't help to overall feeling. The similar problem I have how the whole raceways are designed...

The overall feeling I got after several races was a strong desire to force choke the new npcs and made Imperial forces destroy the whole crap.

I will gladly ignore the whole event.

I am not ashamed to say that I liked it. There are most definitely things that can be improved. If nothing else, it would be nice to see the NPC's standing on the floor instead of in the floor.

It is not a big event, there is not that much to do, but it is entertraining and I immediately completed all 9 tracks/gangs. I will do it again too. It is something else to do and a welcome change.

i like it a lot. finally an event that doesn't involve kill 20 x forces, click there, activate console rinse and repeat. except from minor bugs on cut scenes, its fun. achievements are also fun.

some people are hard to please no matter what

It's a nice change of pace and something else to do during the week it is running. I assume most of the disappointed people had far too high expectations, which is basically the running theme for the development of this game. It's pretty much what you can reasonable expect as far as "racing" is concerned for this small team and this clunky engine, and comparing it to other racing minigames is rather futile.

The only real disappointment for me are the mount rewards, which should be the biggest enticer to do the event. Even if they cannot implement a fully realized racing minigame with the circumstances they are given, they could have at least designed 3 new mount rewards that actually look and feel like swoop bikes instead of only one of them. 2 of the 3 crews simply offer boring reskins of already existing mounts and they don't feel like swoop bikes at all.

Feels like Wario kart and I'm Yoshi gettng bounced and spun around. After about three races I had enough. As everyone, I found it very underwhelming. It's not anything I would consider doing again. Funny thing is I'm not disappointed. I expected it to be "Meh" and it was.

Clunky, slow,

If there's one thing a racing event shouldn't ever be - it's SLOW.

I really hate "bashing" BioWare and our beloved SWTOR (9+ year beta sub = me) yet again this week but.... those 2 posts ^^ are pretty much how i felt as well.

Will i end up doing all the dailys/weeklys anyway, just for the rep & cheevos? Yeah, probably.

But i really just want so badly for SWTOR to get something right these days. (like they did w/ 6.0 gearing & 6.0.1 conquest, imo) .

I know the Devs are hamstrung by the engine and by budget & staff (or lack therof) but gosh i dunno....i was sorta hoping for 'Swoops' to be something....better. Perhaps they can tweak & smooth things out for next event cycle :(

I think it´s funny - I didn´t expect much and I like that it´s different.

I needed to get used to it a bit but I think it´s cool that you have other players on your track.

I wish the rewards were a bit cooler though - I´m only going to buy decorations.

Compare with beetle racing in GW2.

Nothing I've seen in *any* other MMORPG compares to GW2 mounts.

Nothing. Not the Runes of Magic "Rune Disk", not rancors in SWTOR, not that one thing in Allods Online, nothing.

Dino was good. Even though it's slow, Fishie is good, too, given the amount of water / lava / sulphur on some GW2 maps. Carlos(1) is a bit specialised, but cool anyway. Mr Buns has uses that are unique.

Then we have Griffy and the Dragocopter that are unbeatable for aerial coolness.

And Petey the Roller Beetle. Imagine a jet-powered ball-wheel unicycle, and you're kind of close.

Imagine one that can break 130 mph(2) and can easily grab air for ten or more seconds if the terrain permits, and you're there.

(1) the Jackal, duh.

(2) At the best of times, SWTOR's tier 5 Piloting Speed ability isn't even 40 mph.

I watched a video of it from PTS before the event went live to get a basic understanding of the mechanics.

I went through one of the tracks 3 times before I realized there was no reason for me to devote any time for it.

The controls for blowing stuff up are clunky (in my mind) and, to be honest, that didn't even work smoothly for me.

Moving with WASD, "aiming" with your mouse, how are people pressing 1,2,3 for the abilities? I have a MMO mouse and even using my thumb for the abilities didn't work well.

(I'm a clicker, I rarely use keybinds)

Doesn't matter though, the rewards from the rep vendor are not interesting.

Boring armor skins

Mount designs I'm not interested in.

I hope it gets better for the people who do enjoy it.

What will you do when they gate certain awesome rewards behind Swoop Racing? Will you practice it, or just wish those who like it best?

Has that mechanic been used before? Putting a really cool reward at the end of some rep grind that wasn't there at the start?

What did people do?

If some reward happens that is only at the end of swoop racing, then I'll have to suck it up and do the grind.

I won't be able to make any legitimate complaints, beyond "this sucks," because it would be a result of a choice I made.

How long ago did they implement the "wings of the architect" mount? To me, that's the single best looking mount in the game and I WANT it.

However, I've never put in the time to practice to be good enough to get on a NIM/MM raiding team.

It sucks, but I also don't want them to change the rules and make it easier to get.

...yes I know guilds "sell" it by carrying people through the raid, but that's not for me either...

stuff in swtor CAN be fast tho - GSF has some good speed in it

if they could have done something like GSF but for swoop racing - that would have been much more impressive

True that would have been nice. Though GSF was advertised as a minor expansion, this is 'simply' an event. If you look at Bounty Brokers for instance or the Nightlife event...this is more imaginative and more fun imo.

Yeah that's me too. I was just curious what you'd do.

Honestly I wouldn't bother doing it, when I don't like a part of a game, I don't play it. Well, it's rare I will entertain a part of a game I dislike. Only time is if i try to give it another shot.

The whole thing is straight up lazy just like this games engine.

I think that was the issue. Made sure that both got their grenades and 15 total. Achievement done.

Completed all the perfect races except the Horizon's Razors on Dantooine and Onderon. I swear I am not hitting anything, the worse being that I can't tell what I am doing wrong (if I am... because at this point I am convinced that the game has a hard time registering collision with the high speed of this gang) and you only find out when hitting the finishing lane. So it's done for this character for the day.

You don't use WASD to move, the swoop is "on rail" and will move forward without any input so you only steer with your mouse and you have your hand free to hit the hotkeys.
