Update on the Ship Role in Game Update 2.8

Hey folks,

 

I wanted to give you all an update on the new ship role that Bruce had mentioned previously in his roadmap, slated for Game Update 2.8. Unfortunately, that ship role has been pushed out indefinitely. Not to say it is impossible to be brought in at a future date, but it has been pushed off of our current roadmap.

 

Certainly the first question to be asked is why? Our roadmap began to shift into a new direction with a high priority placed around both Galactic Strongholds and that other expansion Bruce briefly mentioned before. In looking at our current schedule, we felt that Starfighter was in a healthy state and so by cutting the new role, we could make a better experience for our upcoming expansions.

 

We definitely realize that this will be upsetting news to players who are big fans of GSF. We don't want you to feel like we are just leaving GSF in the dust in place of other features. Coming in GU 2.8 there are 2 new ship variants coming, a new Gunship and a new Bomber. I know it isn't as exciting as a whole new role but we want you to know we are still dedicated to expanding GSF, like all of our game systems.

Good to hear. Any news that is about making the expansions as great as possible is acceptable.

 

Here here! I definitely think it is a wise choice. GSF is in a great place right now and while I love the attention placed on it there are other areas that need help too. Looking forward to see all the other things in the pipe.

Especially the latter expansion that is expected to be like Makeb. We haven't had real story questing content in a significant portion since Makeb.

Thank you for the update! I love GSF but as repetitive as my response may be I agree with those in this thread. I think attention will best be placed in other areas. Again thank you for the update Eric.

 

P.S. please for me Eric could you answer a popular question?

Is there any hope for a toggle hood option in the future?

The 2.8 notes will go live once PTS is up. That is still tentatively planned for tomorrow!

Just out of interest, any news on when we can expect an updated roadmap?

 

Bruce is hard at work on it. I am still not entirely sure on a timeline, I would be reluctant to say sometime next week but I am not sure. We are actively working on it and want to get it out to all of you ASAP.

Don't we keep seeing hood / no-hood variants? I'm guessing that means no.

Not a big shock for those of us who've put a lot of time in, queues have been getting longer and longer even at peak times.

 

I'd like to see a degree of honesty* here, I don't think we're going to get one..

 

I got the timeline, understood Bioware's process here, they saw PvE space getting numbers and the massive pre-beta requests for space action, and they jumped on it.

 

Sadly, as so many MMO's do, they saw a BIG win in grabbing the hard core PvP/EVE/*Famous* 'X-Wing vs TIE Fighter' market and failed to see that the people asking for this content ain't them.

 

I'm sorry gang but Star Wars fans didn't grow up playing call of duty, they grew up playing vanilla X-Wing a & Tie Fighter. One day, some exec in a suit will get it... and will be burnt upon the altar of supposed heresy and their bones shall be gnawed upon for their delicious juices....

 

mmmmMmmmm ..... delicious juices... :p

 

* Numbers like these "80% increase in space PvP battles in the last 3 months!" ..are bad numbers.

 

Same numbers, "80% increase in the space PvP battles in the last 3 months!.. with an increase in gaming time across the board up by 140%" so a marked decrease in real terms.. and "PvE space down 60% in adjusted player time since 2.0, essentially because we've abandoned it and haven't had a reward change in years, unless you count the reward nerf. Sorry about that."

I have yet to try GSF: it just doesn't seem like it would appeal to me (without joystick type controls).

 

But thanks for the consistent, clear communication... even when you think the message may not be popular. :)

 

It's alot of fun. It's not hard with the mouse and key and once you get use to the controls its easy to move around and very engaging.

 

I'm am a bit dissapointed that there won't be new ship role *cough the stealth style infiltrator cough* But i understand that other content needs to take some priorities. I just hope we get more gamemodes and more in upcoming major content patches

While I could be politically correct with my first response, let me get this out of the way first.

 

God-&^%$-damn-it. Not only have you postponed this ship class indefinitely, you also removed it from the roadmap, so no release in 2014. Nice try to throw a bone with the 2 last ships, that's all we need in the maps, more gunships and bombers with the same abilities that are already available in game.

 

Now with that out of the way, I want to say thank you for giving us pilots this information, it may not be what we / I want to hear, but it's honest.

GREAT decision Eric! I commend you guys for adjusting your roadmap after mentioning it...that takes a certain amount of courage when it comes to telling the community, but it was most certainly the correct and wise choice!

News that says the limited development budget allotted to the game isn't going to be spent on some space PVP mini game I don't play is welcome news to me.

 

One thing I would love to see would be some sort of participation metrics showing how players (and especially subscribers) spend their game time between different types of content.

 

My assumption is that GSF participation is limited to a very small portion of the player base, and thus any investment in GSF over other portions of the game enjoyed by a broader base would make little sense.
