What event expelled the Sith a 1000 years before their return in the game?

I've been trying to figure out what expelled the Sith from Korriban a thousand years before the start of SWTOR, but haven't been able to find anything on it on lore websites. Can someone give me a name for what it was called?

(Close the parenthesis on the above poster's link and you will get the concluding battle to the Great Hyperspace War)

However, you must remember that Vitiate was never involved in the Great Hyperspace War and began gathering followers in the terror/threat that the Republic became at the end of the war. See this link especially the History section

Your answer lies in the feud between Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh over the Empire that Marka Ragnos created.

You can read more about the Great Hyperspace War here

Bottom Line: The Sith destroyed themselves, as they always do, through their quest for power. The Jedi led Republic just cleaned up the remnants from the infighting.

On a related note, Lord Vitiate was Ludo Kressh's "Apprentice". Upon the defeat of his former Master, Vitiate took the remainder of the Sith Forces in battle over Korriban and fled beyond the known galaxy(at that time). It is after years of searching, that they discovered Dromund Kaas and began to rebuild Ragnos' Sith Empire.

Sorry but this is not correct.

The Republic Navy was tasked to wipe out the surviving Sith and all the leftovers of the Sith Empire at the end of the Great Hyperspace War. The Republic and Jedi were the destroyers not the ones who cleaned up the mess. The Great Hyperspace War was between the Republic and the Sith Empire, Sadow and Kressh had a rivalry before and during the war but their forces had two battles against each other. Most of the effort was against the Republic.

Also Vitiate was proclaimed a Lord of the Sith by Ragnos but Vitiate was never an apprentice to anyone. At the start of the Great Hyperspace War he decided not to get involved with the conflict. Vitiate also knew the location of Dromund Kaas but instead of leading his people there directly he took them on a 20 year journey to increases his people's dependence on him.

Both of you are right and wrong.

The Sith refused to surrender and vowed to return. The senate decided not to give them that chance and tried to slaughter them all.

So you're saying that the Sith in-fighting didn't lead to their downfall? At that point in time, a unified Sith front would have swept the unprepared Republic before it. Sadow had unified the military arm of the Sith Empire after he thought he had defeated Kressh. When Sadow's forces were defeated over Primus Goluud, he retreated to Korriban, where Kressh was waiting. A inner Sith battle erupted between the two Sith's forces, with the Republic arriving to finish the job. Seems like a cleanup job to me.

The Sith have always been destroyed from within. History has shown that.

Still, you have to admit that if it wasn't for the systematic genocide on Korriban the current war would never have occurred. You can't really blame Vitiate and his followers for swearing to get even, they had every right to. Especially when you consider that it was Naga Sadow's warmongering that lead to the slaughter and most of the millions killed on Korriban had nothing to do with it.

I think I may have misinterpreted this part of your previous post. Seeing this I know/agree on what you meant.

The previous post to me read like the Sith were destroying themselves in some sort of civil war and then the Republic & Jedi got involved. Sort of like the Unification Wars with Empress Teta or some occurrences that have taken place in the real world.

Just wondering do you have a source for this? I've always read/interpreted that the Republic wanted to beat the Sith completely and never seen anything about a refusal to surrender, ie the quote below from the Galactic Timeline videos

"The Sith no longer posed a threat to the Republic, but the Supreme Chancellor was unsatisfied."

Errr no, I'm sure that's how the Republic might have glossed it up in the history books but in truth the attack was unprovoked, they just swept in and slaughtered them, merely assuming they would return.

Some random Sith (given Sadow is in exile and Ragnos is dead) didn't just broadcast

on the HoloNet.

Simple version.

At the end of the Third Great Schism, also known as the Hyperspace Wars, the Republic made a decision to commit genocide on the Sith Order as well as the Pureblooded Sith in an effort to prevent them from ever duplicating the Hyperspace Wars. Prior to our conflict, the Hyperspace Wars were considered the bloodiest conflict to the level of the American Civil war which to this date still outstrips the American Death Toll of any war America has fought.

Billions died in the Hyperspace War and the Republic didn't want to go though that again. The answer was the complete extermination of the Sith Empire.

The Emperor (known as Lord Vitiate at this time) gathered the broken survivors and fled known space. Hiding on the lost world of Droumond Kaas, the Empire spend 1000 years hidden from the eyes of the Galaxy (Intentionally assisted by the Star Cabal) rebuilding.

By 28 BTC the Empire had been hidden for a thousand years and the now Emperor decided it was time to put into action his plan to destroy the Republic and the Jedi that had once destroyed his Order.

Well, crudely-hidden... the Sith kept leaking information about their existence, either inadvertently or deliberately (Jedi Civil War...) but no one could figure out where they were actually coming from, and the Republic was preoccupied with other things, so only a few individuals (like Revan) gave it any serious thought until it was too late.

This is also why Gav & Jori Daragon matter (and you're wearing their loincloths) — they were two Republic explorers who stumbled onto Korriban and triggered a chain-reaction that led to the Republic and Sith rediscovering themselves.

Rough/crude timeline to get the general idea:

  • Jedi Dark and Light users have multiple conflicts, and eventually Darksiders are exiled completely and disappear from known space
  • Dark Jedi find Korriban and the darkside-wielding Sith species, and become their overlords, interbreeding with the population to create the mixed Sith species and taking their name as the Sith philosophy
  • Long time passes as the Sith and Republic do their own thing, oblivious to each other
  • Gav & Jori Daragon accidentally discover Korriban, and via Sith interrogation, the Sith learn of the Republic again
  • Naga Sadow manipulates Gav & Jori as pawns to allow him to wipe out Kressh, his rival for control of the Sith, and manipulates the presence of Gav & Jori into seeming like the Republic is invading the Sith
  • Thus, Sadow completely controls the Sith and has motivated them to war for his own purposes (dreams of power/conquest). They invade the Republic 'from beyond hyperspace' and battle each other across hyperspace distances, hence the Hyperspace Wars
  • Republic defeats the Sith and drives them back
  • Republic Chancellor is so horrified by the bloodiness and destruction of the war that he orders the complete genocide of these attackers, not accepting mere surrender or retreat. Korriban is bombarded, other worlds, etc. Sith species is essentially wiped out, Sith are essentially wiped out.
  • Vitiate (future Sith Emperor) tricks a bunch of surviving Sith Lords into staying at his palace on Nathema, and mind-controls them into taking part in a ritual that kills them all, all life on Nathema as well, and makes him effectively immortal.
  • Thus ready to plan his revenge, Vitiate rounds up the few Sith that survived the Republic purges and takes them on a journey in exile across hyperspace to Dromund Kaas, where they slowly begin building an Empire. This happens about 1300 years before SWTOR.

The reason the Republic didn't just swoop in and wipe them out again whenever it became clear the Sith survived (eg, Jedi Civil War) was because it had been so long since the Hyperspace War that no one really remembered the details or hyperspace lanes leading to the Sith homeworlds, and no one in the Republic had ever been to Dromund Kaas, thus had no idea where to even begin looking.

It's a bit like being in a pitch-black room and stabbed — for hundreds of years, people in the Republic and Jedi knew someone was there, but had no clue where they were actually coming from, and could only deal with their minions and lackeys and ponder what was going on.

Very true.

Mine is just the simple version for those looking for a simple answer. You are correct in that there are a vast multitude of chain links in the lore but remember we Loremasters tend to lose people when we get too descriptive.

Yeah I know. It's always so hard to decide how much to simplify things. :(
