Melee weapon discipline / character rework discussion

Hello everyone

 

I am not really an old or experienced player but from someone recently came from other mmorpg games I wanted to share my opinion. That would be great if you guys add up your thoughts aswell.

 

*When I started playing Powertech / VG, I was REALLY hoping for a non-force user going toe-to-toe with other classes in melee range. But from what I experienced, you don't feel like a melee, or a ranged, not even a hybrid for most of the time. It seems like you have a blaster in your hand to be used as a "filler" in your rotation, and most of your melee attacks coming from a magical glove so called "prototype". After playing a while I switched to juggernaut in disappointment but I still couldn't get over my powertech, just dreaming how cool it would be with an actual melee focused rework. As far as I know (correct me if I am wrong) there are also melee troopers wielding vibro weapons in The Old Republic.

*Continuing melee discussion from other perspective, since this in an RPG game (excluding MMO here), charging to my opponents with a blaster gun / rifle on my hand really feels off. You are moving through the lightsabers with a gun or whatever in your hand. I know this is a game but it really disconnects me from game-reality or logic whatever.

*Character progression in terms of skills are really all over the place, you acquire a TON of similar skills just doing the same aoe in different shapes. While other characters were getting signature moves like charge, you have to hit higher levels to acquire such utilities.

*Defense and sustain in both PVP / PVE is really incompetent when you compare it with other classes. Even though it is able to deal decent or mid - to - high tier damage, in terms of defense you are not even at the level of a hatred assassin(not mentioning about cloak). Which is an assassin after all while Powertech / VG is being described as a melee wrecking ball.

 

I am not an expert in terms of class balance management, nor can I evaluate what it takes to rework a class with a whole new weapon and mechanics but I can tell you that this class can be one of the most fun in entire game. I mean it has the potential to be there.

 

I am really hoping to start a decent discussion if other people feel the same way I do, or if it contradicts with how you feel about the class. So maybe I can look from your perspective if you think this class is ok.

I use to main ap/tactics I like having a blaster and having advance technology to put me on the same playing field as a force user. However when you look at actual game play your right for defense our cd well are lacking compared to alot of other classes. Hell i think our dps isnt that great either tbh. Ap/tactics really do need some love in one form or another.

 

Also if people get tired of the blaster I think a shotgun of sorts would be a good alternative to a blaster rifle. That way it make since to have to get closer range.

I wholeheartedly agree that a shotgun or short range energy blaster of some kind would be great for the Vanguard. I just can't get over how a class with a blaster rifle needs to be right up in their enemy's face just to hit them, though it would go a long way to explain why the Storm Troopers were so innacurate in the movies haha.

 

Honestly though, failing that, I'd love to just see them punch up he Vanguard's animations a bit. Some of them just feel really weak regardless of how much damage they do. Powertech animations are by and large fine as far as I'm concerned, though the fact that they don't get Death From Above is the main reason why I chose Mercenary as my main

I saw a cartoon where a bounty hunter picks up a saber and goes to town.

Yes a saber or a vibro knife would be an awesome alternative to a bounty hunter.

 

Imagine having " rapid slashes “ vs " rapid shots ", while I would lose my range I would be happier lore or playstyle wise.

And for a bonus effect each slash heals you for 2% of your health, that would be the ultimate icing on the cake.

1st. They cannot chsnge ranged weapon on game to something else on PT

2nd. There are already blaster rifles which looks like shotguns

3rd. Vanguard uses his rifle in many many abillities

 

And, imho, regular blaster rifle is coolest weapon in SW universe, sadly Hunters uses pistols instead
