If psychedelic drugs are "spice" then what do you call spice for cooking?

Plus, the supposed original use of spice was way, way back in the Pre-Republic days of generation ships, as a food preservative.

 

It's believed that the original reason people (on earth) even started using spices was for their antimicrobial properties. It started as a food preservative, and it was only after that people realized it could affect the flavor.

 

So, these pre-Republic colonists must have had a similar sort of situation. Ancient civilizations put it on their food to keep it from going bad, and realized when they ate it that it tasted good. Pre-Republic colonists put it on their food and realized when they ate it that they could totally hear colors, maaaan...
