Hello everyone!

 

Today we published another interview-styled article. This time we sat down with our Art Director to talk about what it was like bringing Onderon into SWTOR. If you would like to give it a read, it can be found here.

Its fascinating to hear the developers talk about how their work is done behind-the-scenes as well as their inspirations, the entire process is very interesting to read about. I'm glad these types of posts are being made as it gives us a glimpse into how the concept art shapes the gameplay.

It was interesting read, can´t wait to see how Onderon will be during the expansion. I also wonder if we might see some neat KoTOR 2 references? :D

Don't forget Tales of the Jedi references too! And I'm sure we'll get a lot of them in codex entries if not mentions during dialogue. Their track record shows they care deeply about the rich history of Star Wars since they always include references to previous works, Ossus has Tales of the Jedi/Dark Empire references and Dantooine has Tales of the Jedi, and KOTOR 1/KOTOR 2 references. I'm looking forward to reading in-game about things like Nadd, the Beast Wars, etc.

The planet design looks good but not fan of the old story line contents it good dam boring and isolated like these boring on going dailies we have to suffer through,

 

Not happy at all with the direction this game is taking we need the chapters like Knights of the eternal throne but with more versilities to be able to do them as in solo, groups and ops of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 16 with the gear drops give higher gear than what you have on where the gear is matched with what you got the ability to disintegrate or sell it for credits.

 

On top of this each companion should have its own storyline to complete between each chapter

example: Nico Okarr

You play as Nico Okarr to recover a hidden ship components from Ossus in order to use it rebuild your broken down ship during this mission he encounters enemy that hell bent on stopping him completing the mission he has to fight, steal and ravage through the planet to get the part and get off before he is overwhelmed by enemy force republic force (imperial side), captured or Killed (republic side) the mission ends when Okarr communicates with you on the success off the mission or its failure and third choose with a message Okarr was captured and killed in battle.

 

Another example: Shae Vizla

Shae discovers on Korriban plan by former sith councillors attack the imperial base on Rishi and reignite feud between the sith in order to restore the former dark council with former Darth Howl planning to take head council spot as she races to alert you in the outrim terrority her ship is attacked and force to land on taris there she is taking hostage to lure your allies into a trap,

 

Shae cunning she manages to escape but must now find away to get off the planet and in doing so avoid the rakghoul outbreak, imperial forces and republic search party whom is on the planet looking for down ship and get a message to you about this evil plan.

 

Final example: “Deadeye” Leyta

You are alert to the 4 alliance commanders being capture on Ziost during on going meeting between republic and imperial over ending the fighting on Ossus, Odessen, and other planets and the Ziost is over run with republic forces who have turned on jedi council and want to end your grip on power,

 

Deadeye Leyta commands a small elite forces and has contacts within the Jedi council he request to aid them to restore order and to get the Alliance commanders back before all out attack by the imperial forces lead by Admiral Longman a ruthless imperial admiral who prefers to kill with chemicals rather than diplomatic solution he commands halve the former imperial forces in the outrim and once he gets news of the republic forces attack on the meeting he will unleash his upon the republic forces across the galaxy engulfing the region in all out war between republic and imperial forces.

 

Deadeye Leyta is trusted allied and you know if there is anyone who can rescue the four alliance commander its the jedi council members so you give him your blessing to proceed knowning failure will result in hundreds of star systems being attacked by imperial forces as Deadeye Leyta prepares to leave many other alliance companions join him leaving only Lana with you to command the overall alliance forces that stand between Admiral longman and the rest of the star systems and galaxies.

 

Deadeye Leyta leaves on his most daring mission taking with him some of the finest warriors across the galaxy his first destination is Coruscant where he must contact the only Jedi who can get a message to the Jedi master and convince him to accept the alliance help in rescuing the captured alliance commanders and stopping the rogue republic troopers in there tracks.

 

Upon Coruscant is a traitor whom is both sith and jedi his been sent to stop any one informing the Jedi Master and the rest of the jedi order of what happening on Ziost will deadeye fall into this trap or will he succeed.

 

Once Deadeye lands upon Coruscant he must under mission deep within Coruscant seedy world to find out where his contact is hold up but obstacles and traitors still lurk within these region.

 

Republic side: The mission ends in the Old jedi temple with Deadeye fighting the traitor and finally uncovering where his Jedi contact is hold up on Coruscant.

 

Imperial side: Deadeye is fooled by the traitor and ends up getting taking hostage while the traitors own forces start killing deadeyes forces one by one.

 

Third choose in the ending if you are Neutral in the force:

Jedi contact comes to deadeyes rescue and agrees to inform the jedi master and both dead eye and the jedi master take a commanding force to Zoist where order is restored and the alliance commanders are rescue.

 

Depending on scenario above.

 

if Deadye is captured all out war begins between Imperial and republics with you being forced to choose a side with Lana as your advisor.

 

If jedi contact comes to deadeyes rescue and contacting the Jedi master order is restored and peace talks begin to unfold.

Deadeye is seen standing guard outside where the meeting is taking place and the other alliance commanders are seen setup road blocks, and checking those coming to the meeting to ensure no weapons are being smuggled in.

 

if neutral stance in the force is taken The ending shows Deadeye, jedi master and you talking about eventful peace being found with Deadeye saying he never knew you trusted him so highly among your companions and bows down in respect of your leadership, faith in him.

 

The gear reward for companion storyline should be weapon that bolster there damage or Health otherwise decoration in the companions honour through out the mission.

 

The final reward for completing the mission is gear based on level and command rank that can be used in future created character own in other wise it goes to your collection inventory and can be unlocked for future use across other servers from level 1 and or large amount of credit.

 

The companion storyline can be completed in solo or group up to 4 people each member of the group must successfully complete separate stage during the encounter solo before the final fight this means each person in the group goes off in different direction completing a task before everyone meets at the final destination.

 

if you under take the companion storyline solo the stages where the group would split is where your support aids I.e the other allies that are with you disappear until the final encounter.

 

The companion storyline is 4 hour event and must be completed before you can undertake the next chapter each chapter is between 20 to 2 hours themselves but each companion storyline is 4 hours solid and take you on a journey across the planets you encounter during the companion storyline while the chapter only focus upon section of the planet your on.

 

The final chapter quests in an space war where you are going from one ship to another attacking, defending, escaping capturing the enemies fleet or destroying it depending upon the scenario with the final encounter where you have to fight your way into the command centre of the enemy lead ship fight your arch enemy of equal strength, wit, cunning and tactics, this is final chapter is a complete 8 hour event and can be saved at the point in time during the mission in case you need to log out or go to bed or want to go off doing guildies stuff etc.

 

This final chapter give you the best gear for your character with good amount of credits and one decoration of the old republic time line characters and leaders within the game fallen over time, and you can recruit a new companion to replace a fallen one if you so wish to do so or disband the fallen companion and reclaim there gear.

 

Leads into whom the new villain is going be for swtor future.

 

Total of 6 chapters and 20 companion missions in all this will keep everyone busy until next expansion and incorporates all the planets in the game for each chapter and companion mission.

 

Designed around use of your companions instead of just your class character.

 

The final twist of the chapters depends on where you stand in the force i.e light side, dark side or neutral.

 

If your neutral in the force you meet both republic and imperial new leader's they will lead encrypted code for the next expansion.

 

If your dark side:

imperial agent a secret leader is reveal in encrypted holograph, Sith soceror will see an image of self proclaimed emperor , Sith warrior will be confronted by ghost image of your former master Darth bara's with encryption message being let behind at your feet, Bounty hunter will meet the new Darth master in dark closed room and there face hidden,

 

If lightside

 

Trooper will meet the new fleet commander via holo terminal with a cut in transmission, about whats coming, Jedi Knight will meet the New General of the Jedi's forces and remarks about future conflict, Jedi consular will meet the Jedi Master and the new Jedi order with concerns over the future leaving you with code message they incepted to work out what's coming.

Smuggler get a new ship delivered from the new republic boss left inside is a message of the coming event that the smuggler will be involved in but pieces of what holds is missing.

Good: They are using Star Wars: The Clone Wars as visual inspiration. That's a canon source, not a legends source, and I couldn't be more thankful for that

 

Probably Bad:

"modular approach to our city building - meaning the city is broken up into several sections"
- can't understand this decision at the moment. This was horrendous on Makeb and is a key reason I never have the urge to go back there. It was even worse on Zakuul. The way that planet is arranged makes it hardly feel like a planet at all. This sounds and looks from the pictures to be more like the Makeb concept, but I just can't picture how this is going to work. When announced and even from the attached pictures, I was expecting something similar in style to an Alderaan not a modular concept.

 

I hope I'm reading into this wrong, but the followup quote makes me think I'm interpreting this correctly:

" This allows for more variety and options, instead of doing fully modeled single structures with limited options. You’ll have to play Onderon and let us know how you think that worked out!"

They've already said they're also using KOTOR II and Tales of the Jedi as inspiration too. Stop going on your anti-legends crusade. Its rather silly considering the game isn't part of canon, and as such it doesn't need to to draw exclusively from one source.

You must be right. The game has so many subscribers right now it couldn't possibly need any more.

Is Onderon going to be extremely linear in where we can travel, void of all possible world PvP we see in every single other planet? I sure hope not. This is, after all, "onslaught". I would expect at least some level of a free, open to explore sandbox type planet where we can easily encounter opposing factions for some cool world PvP that is SORELY lacking in this game.

 

Not holding my breath though. It will probably be just another re-skinned planet with the same linear paths your faction is allowed to traverse in, doing the same fetch quests and every single other planet in this game.

I'm glad to see SWTOR is following "Star Wars" again and not somebodies "Pipe Dream" out in left field anymore. I'm still concerned about the Companions though, many are very faction minded and would never switch sides. I hope Tau has Cheered up lately from her "Pity Party", that gets old quick. Arn is..... Troubling, makes me uncomfortable.

I know Onderon better from the Clone Wars and the rebels led by the young Saw Gerrera.

 

I'm sure the concept and final art will be awesome. :D

 

Lets hope some of the writing and combat team watched those episodes and had some more dynamic action for the latest chapter. It's getting a bit lame when there are two bases- and bunches of imperials or republic aligned people standing in groups within a few dozen yards of one another. ( yawn)

 

Lets add in some tanks rolling in from the jungle- Legions of droids or troops to fight, a nice bug town to fight in and a PVP map/ area to boot.
