Why people dislike Consular gear.

Many people have been complaining that Consular gear is ugly, and the response I hear most often is that Jedi are supposed to be humble and simple; if you want flashy gear, roll Inquisitor.

I would like to point out that this is not about simple-looking gear, but ugly designs.

Now I know everyone has different tastes and opinions, and many might actually enjoy the designs I list. This thread isn't so much to contradict their preferences, but to suggest additional styles for the future.

Robes:

Big difference here. Robes from TOR are much more intricate, and many have terribly clashing colors. A version of the first one I showed had a mix of rust and turquoise, along with that odd triangle pattern. Compare this with the few Jedi from movies, whose robes were much more simple.

Do note though, that despite simplicity there is a fair amount of variation and a distinct look. Darth Maul's being a nice example, his is much more loose and flowing, with d****** sleeves that leave the forearms exposed.

Tunics:

Without the robe, there is an even greater contrast between styles. Now, given that simple clothing tends to be Light Armor, it's no surprise that there would be a lot of Senator-styled clothing in the Light Armor department. But there seems to be very little non-robe gear that looks like it's actually made for Jedi.

Pants:

I've got little more to say about this save that there's not a great selection. The only reasonably dark pants I've found are those Alderaan ones; dark green with salmon-colored hips.

All the others I've ever found have been bright, nearly-white colors.

In addition, they're all tights. Not a single pair of loose or comfortable-looking pants which are rather important for martial arts.

Now that I think about it, most Jedi I've seen wear pants under their main hooded cloak, along with a tunic. Even Yoda!

These are the reasons people dislike Consular clothing; not necessarily because they want something flashy or fancy, but because the choices that actually exist are simply ugly or have no relation to what Jedi in various other sources actually wear.

Don't forget that the images of actual Jedi you posted are lore-wise 3000 years in the future. It's a bit possible that fashion designs may have changed slightly during that time.

SWTOR is set in a time of war while the movies are set in a relatively peaceful time just before a war. Therefore it is completely understandable that SWTOR gear would be just that little bit more geared towards combat. This would be why our gear has things like shoulderplates and less layers for more mobility.

Do remember that while SWTOR is certainly first and foremost a massively multiplayer online game, it is an MMO with a huge emphasis on single player storyline and lore. Because of this you are not going to find extravagant gear sets for every class like you might in other MMOs.

Now you said that many players do not want flashy gear but rather want well designed gear and I can completely understand the difference there, but unfortunately that is 100% a debate of opinions and so will most likely not be strong enough to get BioWare to do anything about it in the near future. Personally I am very happy with the endgame PvP gear (PvE gear is a bit bleh but whatever), but that is just my opinion.

tl:dr

You make some good points, but since this is a debate of opinions in which there is no clear majority you are not likely to see any changes in the near future (maybe our next tier set will be more impressive, who knows).

P.S.

I pretty much guarantee you will never see any sort of pants aside from tights in MMOs. Most pants (light armor especially) are simply retextures of the characters actual legs which make them very easy to design and render. Loose pants simply create far too much trouble to be worth the effort. Very very few MMOs have anything other than tights or skirts for the leg slots, and that is in place for a reason. :(

There is however a very nice set of custom gear that drops off mid-high 30 level mobs (most commonly on Hoth). I forget the name of it but it features a very simple gray/brown robe and matching pants. It's a fairly rare drop but depending on your server's popularity you can probably find a few of the pieces on your Galactic Market.

this is no argument. when people start this game they have the picture of jedis and sith from the movies in their head. the same or similar design was used in the previous star wars games.

now getting confronted with a gear look totally out of place is simply shocking (while this is not so much the case on lower levels it is incredible on endgame, worst example is the sentinels best pvp set).

it does not matter if you can invent an argument about being xxxx years before or after or what ever. this is not how star wars was too about to look! end of story.

You jedis have NO room to talk about terrible design. You obviously haven't seen the raiding teir gear of sith inquisitors

that you have the same or similar issue or even a bigger one does not deny our right of complaining. instead you should better support us as you seem to sit in the same boat

also, i didn't looked at your rainding gear but overall (considering all classes and pvp/pve gear) it strongly seems that the reps have gotten the worse end of the design. but as i said, it doesn't matter who has it worse.

IS IS DAMN BAD AND NOT STAR WARS LIKE!

People don't like the Consular gear because they look like they just stepped off the set of Ru Paul's 'Drag Off!" show.

Exactly. The starting gear wasn't bad, the problem is that it seems to get worse as you progress through the game. The white raid gear stuff doesn't look terrible, but the helmet for a male is terrible. A bunch of helmets look odd for male consulars. I think that is a legit complaint.

I do disagree with the people who say it should just be robes like the movies. That is a bit short sighted I think. BW should have flexibility in this game for new designs, how boring would it be if everyone wore a black robe with a hood. Also, for the people who want this to be "their version" of StarWars, I think you need to cool it a bit, just because there are movies doesn't mean you can't come up with anything outside those movies.

At the moment, my character wears a tunic and pants. The pants are an "off-white-ish grey"; I spent to get moddable boots and bracers that matched.

I'm not sure where I stand on this one; on the one hand, I really do wish we could dye/color our outfits and, on the other, I'm not strongly attached to "A Look" for Jedi other than that they have traditionally been very plain/humble and it does seem that most of the current outfits are much flashier and ornamental than I expected.

I think perhaps this comes from the common MMO theme of gear becoming more flamboyant as a character levels (indicating/inferring status, achievement, etc) and it seems to me that the real conflict rests in that, while there are flashier upgrades, there aren't a lot of choices for those who want to maintain the "traditional" humility/plainness (Particularly if you didn't think about it when those humble looking moddables were dropping in the early FPs, etc).

A nice potential fix would be to have a vendor in the Jedi Temple on Tython who sells those < level 10 moddable items at level 50 prices, or as social gear. Another option would be to include a full suit of moddable traditional gear on the Light vendor (a set for each Light level).

Either way, barring the ability to truly customize color or look, there should be some option for players to have the look they prefer/like.

At least you guys (consular/inquisitors) can make use of the social items as they are the same armor type...

But I have to say, consulars have stupid hats while inquisitors are limited to stupid furry bras with triangles for shoulder pads. Else inquisitors can choose to look like jedis in either white or black depending on the custom item used, but the rest of the selection are idiotic for both classes...

You'd think they take a look at the named npcs in this game that wear robes/dresses and include some of those as player appearances, but sadly, jedi/sith robes are mass produced and distributed to gangsters while random npcs have access to exclusive fashion store that makes clothing just for them.

bioware dropped the ball on exar kuhns lightsaber too.. gave it a red and black crystal.. he used a blue one!

In the timeline pic he did, but every other source I've heard of has him using purple. They dropped the ball on Bastila's double saber and Jolee Bindo's saber for sure though...Bastila used yellow and Jolee used green. They both have black/blue!

the consular set is WORSE .....

Yep. Sithies have NO room to complain, you get Revan's robe and we don't.

My biggest gripe is the lack of pants. As the OP noted most depictions of Jedi show them wearing pants. I don't know if there are any custom light armor pants which might help alleviate the problem.

Perhaps a better comparison would be KOTOR I. The armor robes in that game (more like tunics) all closely resemble the movie Jedi tunics. I'm happy with the robe awarded in the Gree questline, it closely resembles standard Jedi Robes. As for tunics I think they should more closely resemble KOTOR I robes/tunics (since bracers are a separate item there is no need to add armor plating to the armor).

The consular PVE endgame gear is one of the coolest gear in my opinion, the shoulderpads and gloves look very chinese ish, and the "tribals" or whatever you'd call it on the chest back are just amazing. It's MUCH better looking than the smuggler gear (again, in my opinion). I just don't see what the big deal is, sure the consular helmet is awful, but you can turn that off.

I rather like it.

I don't want to look Chinese, I want to look like a Jedi! I don't have a huge problem with reasonably sized shoulder ornaments and wearing lower robes, but I DO take issue with looking like a Vegas showgirl.

Actually that's not why I dislike it.

I rather dislike the lack of dynamics as an infiltration shadow. As a highly agile character I'd prefer an appropriate look that makes such motion plausible.

And that is exactly what they did with the one Shadow who appeared in the movies, Satele Shan, because, well, long robes simply wouldn't have been believable in the Hope trailer. I find the emphasize the top puts on her breasts and her overknee shoes not quite appropriate but it is a look that simply works for the character.

Kira, the companion that knights get, uses long robes but remarkably they chose the narrowest variant they could possibly find for such a vivid and fast character. Actually, narrow as it is, it's not a robe, but rather a dress. Only Nadia, who's evidently a Shadow as well, uses long robes by default.

The long heavy robes is forcing Shadows into an alley that doesn't even work for their own characters. The more concrete the motions and action are shown, the less likely it appears. Off course their is always the heavily cloaked, veiled, "wraith" kind of shadow and that's cool, but that doesn't work for all characters.

Currently I mostly use a "Muse" outfit for my own character. It's not ideal. To bright, too much like a military uniform rather than a Jedi outfit and it's a bit ... too tight in some places. But it's the best compromise I found. I know there are variants in different colors, but those are usually too colorful and I don't like the patterns.

I just want a plain black/white/grey/brown outfit like Luke had in RoTJ.

http://sciencefictionwallpapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/luke-skywalker-jedi-wallpaper-1024x768.jpg

My thoughts exactly, Luke was as light side as they get and he wore all black in ROTJ. I might like to have his cloaked hood from Jabbas palace as well, but the point is simple is better for a shadow.
