gaskull
Un-explored, or whoever did, didn't have the chance of sending back any info of what was discovered to the core systems.

Guildrum
So... Why are they unknown? We don't know. (you see what I did there?)
threepawns
Haha. I'm just curious why it hasn't been explored for so long, but I guess the simplest answer is "We need a mysterious place for our story."
ErikModi
Well, the Unknown Regions at this point in time are a LOT bigger then they are in the post-RotJ era. They are being explored, just not very quickly (charting new hyperspace routes is extremely difficult and dangerous.) Also, long about the time of the NJO, most of the Unknown Regions is full of hyperspace anomalies that make charting a reliable course almost impossible. It is theorized that a "Dark Matter" galaxy is "passing through" our galaxy, and the dark matter casts mass shadows into hyperspace just like regular matter, creating a continually-shifting current of opening and closing hyperspace lanes.
