I lost my pointer to the original discussion about Auto Target Closest Enemy.

I've noticed a pattern to its madness. When you are fighting a group of four enemies, the forth time Auto Target come into play, it seems to always latch onto your Companion. Leaving you unable to attack until you intervene and re-target the last enemy.
