So, hai everyone!

 

I was running a Primary Studies heroic for the Gree event today, I was inquired by a really annoying commando asking why I was dps'ing as a vanguard.

 

I will post down here the convo we had, but of course I'll hide the name.

 

ME: Well, I've met several dps vanguards and nobody told me I was obligated to go tanking when I chose the vanguard AC for this char...

 

HIM: Number one: Bullsh... and number two, like I said, it isn't like vanguards have great dps trees. "I don't like tanking"? (I told him that and it's true from my part) !TF?"

 

ME: The fact that you never met dps vanguards doesn't mean they don't exist... so don't come bullsh... me with that!

 

HIM: Actually, it kinda does. Just like I've never met a Commando tank (***?)...

 

ME: And yeah, I don't like tanking, why do I have to tank only because I have a vanguard? lol...

Commandos can't tank, don't go noob on me as well

 

HIM: Durk... like I said, the dps trees for vanguards suck, and as for your last comment, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'M SAYING!

 

ME: Dude, I don't mind if they syck or ot, I'll play with whatever I feel comfortable playing with... if I don't like playing tank with an AC that can tank, I'm not obligated to do so...

 

HIM: No, but you're still (re)tard for doing so. Goodbye...

Before all of this he was all like "Oh I'm so experienced!" or things like "I play this game for a long time" and bla bla bla... big deal, I'm playing this game for almost 2 years now.

 

So I wanted to share this with you guys to see what are your thoughts.

 

1 - I didn't know that I need to tank being a vanguard;

 

2 - The comparation of never seen a tank commando being the same as he never saw a dps vanguard is just going into full retard to me;

 

3 - Is this the kind of experienced players the newcomers are "obligated" to face during their gameplay?

Already did it... as I said, I just wanted to share this "Only in TOR" moment with you guys and see your thoughts about it.

You don't have to do **** if you don't want to. There is no rule that says you HAVE to be shield specialist (tank) as a vanguard, just as there is no rule that says commandos HAVE to be a healer, or for any class. Play whatever spec you want.

 

Though, as a tank, instant flashpoint ques are nice. But thats your prerogative.

Your game. Your sub (if you sub). Your time. Have fun the way you want to have fun. I love leveling as tank specs, but hate actually tanking (sort of like, i hate driving with people in my car, i hate the responsibility).

Does he go around telling DPS Guardians or Shadows to tank? OR Telling DPS Scoundrels in WZs that they should be healing?

If anyone ask me why I am not tanking but dpsing, I will tell them I will tank next so as to give them a taste of what a full wipe feels like. After everyone has res at med center, I will ask him/her whether I should tank again. That should settle the issue.

ROTFLMAO!!! *wipes tear from eye* This Dude is either so far up his own rear you cant tell where his head begins & his rump ends, or he is just really bad at making an analogy. Either way, just because Vanguards are boss at Tanking, doesn't mean you are required to be a tank. If your game style favors DPS, then DPS. I play a Tank Assassin by far one of the toughest classes to tank with. But it matches my play style & I'm rather good at it. However, i think next time i log in as my Commando I'm going to Tank rather than heal, the Raid boss will NEVER see it coming

Firstly while you are not obligated to tank there is an expectation for vanguards to tank, because it's the best class to tank (Republic side). The Commando is a healer/tank hybrid (although most play it as a DPS), the Guardian is a DPS/Tank like the Vanguard but not quite as good (opinion), and the Shadow can only just tank.

 

This leaves most of the Tanking being done by Vanguards and Guardians, and thus people expect them to Tank, and will complain if A) they don't or B) they aren't any good at Tanking. Personally I can accept that you don't want the aggro of Tanking, especially as people don't accept that you have to learn how to do it (come on idiots think), but others can't (oh joy).

You are wrong about a Shadow. Shadow can tank or dps as well.

I read this and I was laughing so hard inside. Apparently the person you had the conversation with has no clue and is extremely arrogant. As a vanguard, you DON'T have to tank. Their are two dps trees for a reason. I assume that this is coming from PvE perspective, and yes vanguard is not the highest parsing class out there, but that does not mean they are not viable. From PvP perspective, PTs are one of the strongest dps classes and both dps specs are pretty darn powerful in PvP.

My commando generates so much agro when I'm running Heroics or FP's that she might as well be a Tank. I drop 1 heal & every mob rushes her.

What a coincidence. Same thing happens on my Sage healer when the dps have gold fever ...

Next time you run into that, tell the person to check the world's highest parses for Operations. You'll find a Vanguard is world ranked top 10 in most fights.

This sentiment is pretty common.

 

I play a Vigilance Guardian. I've yet to be paired up with another one so I'm sure they're out there but are just small in number. Numerous times when grouping up for heroics I've been told that I was a sucky tank, ****** tank, asked why I was in Shien stance if I was tanking, etc. When I respond that I am a DPS Guardian the response is usually along the lines of "lol wut". Another guy outright said "WHY ON EARTH would any Knight that wanted to DPS not just go Sentinel?!!"............my feelings are exactly like the OPs. I play what I want because I like it.........not because it is currently "cool" or "in fashion" on the forums.

 

Ironically the only other place I come across Vigilance Guardians is PvP...........where supposedly they suck the most.
