If they aren't, then they're being excluded by people who don't know what they're doing. In the right hands, assassin/shadow tanks are unbelievably good, definitely competitive with the other tanks, and even superior in several ways. My current progression raid group runs two shadow tanks, and while we're certainly conscious of the weaknesses of the class (*ahem* trenchcutters), we don't regret this particular compositional choice.

Tam (shadow tank) Tov-ren (commando healer) Aveo (retired sentinel) Nimri (ruffian scoundrel)
Averith (marksman sniper) Alish (lightning sorcerer) Aresham (vengeance jugg) Effek (pyro pt)

We use one in NiM EC. They are unbelievably good in so many situations. Especially the Kephess fight.

Every tank in this game can tank anything effectively given the proper gear and knowledge. For your friend to say Sin tanks are bad is just wrong. Each tank has its own strengths and weaknesses but can always tank anything effectively.

I tank my juggy and my sin as main tank.

More often than not i would prefer the Sin.

He is not only an awesome tank, but he has force pull and he can cc targets, which is awesome when i pug.

Nah man your friends are noobs. If anyone says a class can't do something well, what that means is they can't play that class well. Don't fret your class can tank like any other class. You might need to adjust to the style, but if every class tanked the same way, what would be the fun in that?
