How do I buy a stronghold?!? Where are the vendors and how do I go there when they're bought?
Well... Sith happens.

Go to the "Strongholds" section of the Fleet - north-west quadrant, Republic - south-east, Imperial. There you will find terminals to purchase Strongholds.
Take the small quest from the holo-statue while you're there, to get some free, basic decorations.

Once you buy a stronghold it will appear on your Stronghold list from the drop down at the top of the screen. You go there buy clicking on the "travel" button.

Or just hit "U" to open the stronghold window.

Observation: all your characters can take the mission from the holostatue, but only the first one has to buy a stronghold. If you already have a stronghold on your legacy, just visit it.

And make sure to move around a little because that's required to make the mission complete.

You will need to pay more to unlock extra rooms after you buy the stronghold.

Most are in the stronghold section of the fleet or in the main hub area of the respective planet. You can also do the Crisis Umbara flashpoint around 5 times on Veteran mode, killing all bosses, and you'll be able to unlock the Umbara stronghold by visiting Odessen and buying the trader key from a vendor.

It's more complicated than "about 5 times". Each Veteran run gives 12 tokens, and you are limited to 50 tokens a week, while the key costs 60 tokens, so it's four runs one week, and one run the next. The week in question begins and ends on TUESDAYs at 12 noon GMT.

The trader key allows the owner to enter a special room where you can buy the stronghold. Once you've bought it, any character on your legacy can go there using the "U" panel, even if that character hasn't reached level 2, much less touched Odessen.
