How are Hutts always in power?

My understanding is that their entire race basically evolved as slave masters. For centuries they've done nothing but boss around "lesser" species...and since they give birth a-sexually, eventually they each have a child that eventually replaces them or is given their own command.

Besides, I'm sure lots of them don't have power...but a Hutt without an army for protection is dead meat.

Hutts are normally gigantic and live obscenely long lives (centuries, millennium?).

Though, they could be uncommon in number to aid luxurious lifestyle dominating other races mirroring very large animals on earth. (blue whales are not as numerous as birds and rats). Long lifespans and large but not overly prolific. Quality over quantity.

Read up on the nerd lore, while not depicted 'in movie' cannon it says they are among the most dangerous opponents being they have giant mass blocking any vital organs (being able to shrug off blaster shots like burns) and can move forward like a giant caterpillar or slug, with a mass close to a elephant and crush anything.

The question would be, while large do they usually remain immobile because of choice of decadence or being incapable of it.

I would gauge its a matter of choice, they only move if they have to.

A lot of the more welathy Hutts use hoversleds to move or palanquins or something of the sort.

They live an average life span of about 1000 years, coming into adulthood somewhere around the 400-500s.

They are not so much slave masters as incredibly wealthy jerks. Their slaves are actually indentured servants, who are under contract for so many years but the contract can be extended if the servant does something bad. Slavery itself is illegal in Hutt law because its not profitable. While slaves do cost very little, they are not so easy to control. Insubordination, rebellion, and competition killing off the slaves make slavery very costly to the Hutts.

Hutts are also indigestible, which is why the Sarlaac cannot eat them.

There have been skinny Hutts, but they are seen as weak, since size is a symbol of power to the Hutts.

There have also been Hutts with hair, but they are seen as abominations and shunned.
