Playable and Companion species suggestion checklist thread

The Star Wars universe is inhabited by over thousands of different intelligent and ferocious species. Some although would be hard to add as mentioned previously by the devs involving more voice-overs and story alterations, whilst others could easily be implemented in a major patch. So here I'll be posting a full list of species which seem ideal as playable with some notes attached. I'll also be stating which class they'd be suited to play as based on established Star Wars continuity and lore. If there are any which you believe are missing, post in the thread and they'll be updated soon. Also vote/post which you'd like to see added.

CATHAR HAS BEEN REVEALED AT E3 AS THE NEXT NEW PLAYABLE SPECIES IN A FUTURE UPDATE!

1 - denotes the species is a simple recolor of humans or feature minor anatomical features which means they could be included in a major patch rather than a possible expansion.

2 - denotes the species is already in-game as either an NPC or Companion

3 - denotes was a playable species in Star Wars Galaxies

:csw_jabba:Legacy and Companion species :csw_yoda:

Whilst there are many which would be fun to play as, some wouldn't work as playable due to a number of factors: size, physical appearance and primitiveness. Unless BioWare can work some way to include them as playable (maybe through the Legacy system), they'll be much suited as a companion species for now.

Q&A

If the species is unable to speak basic or features an extreme alien-like appearance for example Wookiees, Talz and Rodians, wont that affect the story in anyway?

It shouldn't really. There'd be some changes with a few lines of dialogue and like currently right now only specific genders can romance certain companions, there'd be some restrictions for romances with specific species.

Althogh it is possible for most alien species to be romancable, for example:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Wedding_of_Nrin_Vakil_and_Koyi_Komad

If the species is small like the Drall, Lannik and Ortolan or is very tall like the Wookiees, Quermian, Talz and Tammuz-an, wont that affect the camera height during cut-scenes?

The size of the species shouldn't matter as seen a while ago with the minature character glitch where the camera and NPC's eye focus will automatically align with the player's height.

If the species can only speak non-basic, then wont that cause some concern?

There really shouldn't be any concern. If you don't want to play as a species who can't speak basic and can only growl or speak huttese, then obviously you wouldn't pick it. There'd be of course subtitles to help compensate this but again if you can't be bothered reading lines of writing, don't choose to play as that species. All the other NPC's dialogue wouldn't have their language changed either to match the player's language and would still stay the same.

Are Rodians able to speak basic?

Yes they can and fluently.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=BweotHZBYlg#t=296s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1kEe8x9zK0&feature=player_detailpage#t=232s

The developers can simply transform the current player voice-overs so they feature an echo, like how the voice changes when a mask is equipped.

Are Grans able to speak basic?

Yes they can and fluently.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BweotHZBYlg&feature=player_detailpage#t=338s

Are Jawas able to speak basic?

Whilst there has been one instance where they've shown to be able to, the subject remains slightly ambiguous, but for now we can say that they can

Wont the camera be a problem for any short species?

Height in the game isn't an issue, unless maybe if they're too tall. The camera automatically aligns with the player's height as well does the NPC's eyesight as shown a while back with the minature glitch, except in some cases when the camera is fixed:

For any other concerns which you may face, especially regarding Wookiees then this thread should answer your questions:

Its a good list not sure about the classes but I am hopeful as many species as possible will be added through the legacy system.

Some I wasn't too sure with the classes seeing as much hasn't been established about their culture or their involvement during this era. For some, official artwork and established continuity states which professions most of them choose to pursue, however again for some it doesn't tell whether it's the same during this era.

Then again, if they were to become playable, it would be up to BioWare what classes they can become available for. I just hope most of them wont become just available through the legacy system.

Very nice list.

I really hope Bioware take note of the list and see what they can do with it. I can't see any reason not to have more interesting species within the game and allow people to play what they want. In a galaxy full of interesting aliens to be limited to human and near human to the extent that Bioware have seems crazy.

I hope so too. However there are some near-human races like the Zeltrons, Pantorans and Sakiyans which could be easily implemented soon, I just hope they don't take too long and leave them for an expansion :(

Actually, I think Bothans would make for exceptional Imperial Agents, as well. That's just my opinion, however. Hopefully the people at Imperial Intelligence aren't too prejudiced to know a good agent when they see one.

Additionally, the Empire may have taken some Bothan slaves during the Battle of Bothawui. Some of them or their descendants may have the potential with the Force to make it as Sith Inquisitors.

A knife wielding Noghri bodyguard for the Republic side :)

Yes the Nagai would be very interesting. They could be the Republic equivalent to the Chiss, however they would also be available for Sith classes based on their society and culture.

As for dialogue, species such as Rodian, Mon Calamari, Togruta, Kel Dor, Cathar, and more have been in the Clone Wars cartoon series and have been voice acted with regular voices. So there's no reason they would have to re-record dialogue to add many more species. The only serious issues are graphical. My hunch is they are saving the addition of some of these species for future expansion packs, though.

I agree. For some reason the VO tends to make people think alien species can not be played. Even in TOR we meet some of all of those species who can speak basic and they all sound like humans, because humans do the VO. I hope we see a lot of species added as part of the legacy system.

I don't think it's more recording new voices for the races, I believe it's that they would need to record more dialogue for others as to how they would react to the player because they're Rodian, Neimoidian, Wookiee etc. However having played the game for a bit, I don't think that would be needed for Cathar, Togruta and even other near human races.

I wouldn't care if when the player talks in conversations, they have them talk in their native language with subtitles at the bottom. I even had an idea to include a feature for existing ones to speak in their native tongue anytime you want with the flick of a key.

I can't think of very many places in the game that species is mentioned by name.

I played the SW and SI story lines with a friend where he was a pure blood and I was Human and you could not tell that at any point the people we were talking to saw either character differently or as anything other than human.

My Zabrek and Chiss are almost never refered to by name but as alien scum or alien or impure. And I can only imagine that if I play a Chiss smuggler in the republic that will require the same levels of dialogue recording as if I was playing a Gran or a Trandoshian or Cathar.

While there will be points that wont mesh perfectly with new races its a game and anytime in a group conversation and how it follows on with different species it doesn't mesh perfectly. So a very minor point against bringing in more interesting species.

Well I wonder if new dialogue had to be recorded, how long would it take?

I wonder if it has to do with cost over time. Although thats what we pay our subscription for. To get extra content. My guess is that everything which we see in the up comming patches has already been designed and worked on for many months already and they know what we are getting. Lets just hope they sahre the info soon. ((Although why would they, if we dont know we continue to sub and build up legacy points hoping for the best, if we knew we might not)).

Well they could at least let us know whether they'd be adding new playable species in either major patches or expanions.

One major thing to note on Bothans.. "Many Bothan Spies died.. to bring us this information..."

That means Imperial Agent and I would suppose Smuggler..

Bothans would work as Imperial Agents, however they generally were allies of their Republic. Although they did remain neutral and offered their services for either sides out of profit. I suppose Imperial Agent would be the only exception for Bothans in the Empire, but then again it would be up to BioWare how they would appear in the game.

Agreed.

Something from the Devs would be good. Are we all waisting our time discussing possible species editions where they just aren't interested in adding them.

I think we all feel the same way. If the Update is out due early March hopefully we wil hear just after Feb 21 as that means they have our subscription even if they say no new species through legacy and fear people will quit.

I don't really get why they would make new playable species only available through the legacy system. I guess the exception would be already existing playable species available for different classes. I hope at least with the mention of new companions that they said they'd be adding they could use more unique species which don't already have in-game models for NPCs.

Updated list with more species.

On a further note, how long would it take to add to the game a near-human race such as Zeltrons as playable? I mean they're clearly a simple re-color, at least a couple weeks or a month? Seeing as Zeltron was one of the popular suggestions for a playable race and since they're active during this era, why weren't they chosen?

I would agree with you that having species added through legacy and not open to everyone at launch of game would be silly. However there seems t be a battle going on in TOR about the single person game where you are a human, hero of your own story and the universe revolves round you and a MMO where you get to play one of a million beings trying to make your way in the galaxy. As the decent alien species are not in at launch I hope they come in through legacy.

Personaly I think its equally strange that they initially say no Chiss (this is just a made up example) smugglers because the lore and story dont work but if you make it to level 10 legacy (again a ade up example) thats ok its now fine to play one. If it makes sense lore wise why not put it in at lauch for everyone.
