level 9 Materials - Are they Farmable or are they Missions only?

My toon is now L50, but haven't started Corellia yet. So, I was going to grind the L50 schematics but it looks like I need L9 materials. They are very pricey with missions, of course. So, I was wondering if I can go for a farming run somewhere? Are there any on Corellia or Ilum or Makeb?

That depends on what materials you are talking about. Gathering skill (scavenging, bioanalysis, and archeology) materials can be farmed on Makeb and the daily areas: CZ-198 and Oricon. Mission skill (slicing, diplomacy, treasure hunting, underworld trading, and investigation) materials are only available by mission no matter what level you are at.

But just my opinion, one is better served running dailies to cover the cost of running missions (and gathering what you can while doing so) than actively farming materials. The average return from one daily quest is about 8000 credits. You can run two grade 9 rich missions (at 3240 each) for that one daily quest and then some.

To comment more specifically to your situation, the lower end areas on Makeb are probably the only place you can go to farm L9 materials at 50 if that's what you want to do. Although there are a few nodes around the entrance area of CZ-198 you can get without fighting.

Generally better off doing something else while running missions as Psandak says, though. Especially at your level.

Zut. Thing is my machine crashed a couple of times in the middle of group missions, so I am afraid to group again until I get a new one. So, I can't really do dailies, I assume (if it is just another name for Group/Heroics). I am very poor credit-wise due to... I dunno. I guess I suck at making credits so I am actually worried about the missions costs. I'll just do Corellia in Lvl 49 rags and stop there for now until I find a smarter ways to play.

It isn't....although there are heroic ones. There are level 50ish (and higher later) daily quests on Corellia, Belsavis, Ilum, etc that aren't any harder/different then normal quests. That's what he's referring to. Lot of people do them just for credits, and while they're far from the best way to to make money, they're easy and a good way to start out and in a pinch.

the best place to farm grade 9 scavaging mats is in the Heroic Area of Makeb ->[HEROIC 2+] The Specialists. Just ignore the jedi/sith and beasts go only for the droids, but the thing is u must be somewhat geared and also your companion(augmented) if u want to solo. I kept doing it in pvp gear since I don`t do ops and HM FP`s and it`s easy, in pve gear id be even easier. Edited by iDraxter

To add to this...

There are many daily areas. and if one read the OP from http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=747376 you will see are ways to make credits although they are time consuming and can get boring after a while.

Belsavis, Black Hole, Section X, and Ilum are all level 50 daily areas

CZ-198 and Oricon are level 55 daily areas.

All of these areas have a weekly quest and one or two "heroic" daily quests. Heroics are ones you generally need to group for (although if you have a well geared character and well geared companion you can solo them). The weekly quest basically requires you to do all the dailies (including the heroics) from that area once a week.

There are also daily quests on Makeb, and there are the Space combat dailies available on your ship.

The short of it is that just doing the solo daily quests in Belsavis, Black Hole, Section X, and Ilum one can make several hundred thousand credits on one character.

Personally, I do not recommend this path as I find it incredibly boring but it is a way to get the credits ball rolling. Just pay attention to my guide on money making strategies: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=731849, specifically regarding "make credits not stuff," don't be stupid with your credits (like so many are), and have patience.

Okay, nothing to do with crafting, but are Voss L50 missions (aka Defending Voss-Kaa) actually quests, not heroics?

Nope, no PvP gear here, and not going to be ever, I think. Lol. Again, by the reason of being forever credit-starved. :) Well, not wanting to do anything with PvP anyway.

And, speaking of augments, and back to crafting - where in the Galaxy those schematics come from? I found a couple on GTN under L50, but the rest is outrageously priced... where do people get them? Super-rare mission drops? Fingers crossed? or do you have to rip them out of the dead cold hands of the Bosses or something?

"Daily" basically means repeatable on a daily basis (as opposed "Weekly" which is repeatable on a weekly basis); most missions are not repeatable at all. Heroic (H2+ and H4+) are almost always "Dailies" even if not explicitly listed as such, but most Dailies are not Heroic. Daily missions that are Heroic will be explicitly listed as H2+ or H4+ as appropriate, so if the Daily doesn't say Heroic, and you are the appropriate level, it should be doable.

Defending Voss-Kaa itself is not a Heroic quest, it is a Weekly quest that requires you to complete each of the listed Heroic Daily quests once. Other Weekly quests (e.g., CZ198) have a mixture of regular and Heroic Dailies.

Thank you: it's complicated :) I guess, the only way to know if you can do it or no, is to try it "till the second death" kind of thing.

EDIT: I guess it's because the game was developed in stages that you can level to L55 without touching the non-class story areas, but you do not have support network for crafting for those levels. Awkward.

Wow!!! You are credit starved because those schematics are usually dirt cheap on my server (at most 10k). They come from running Sliced parts missions in the Slicing skill. And they are very common (for the simple fact that a LOT of players have lots of slicers running those missions a LOT), but since there are 14 of them across three different crafting skills:

  • Synthweavers get: Might, Resolve, Redoubt, Alacrity, Command
  • Armormechs get: Reflex, Skill, Shield, Absorb
  • Armstechs get: Overkill, Fortitude, Critcal, Surge, Accuracy

...getting the exact ones you want can seem difficult.

They are minimum 50K whenever I look, save for Augment 22 and Augment 28 (and save for the unlocks I only ever spent over 50 thou K on anything... like twice when I was trying to assemble one Collectable set of Gear). On a good day my toon has 200,000 credits which evaporate real fast, between crafting and equipping the junior alts and buying unlocks for my husband on the preferred status (that one probably accounts for me being in the red most of all). I hunt for deals, I pass along every piece of blue between the appropriate alts and companions, I am working on getting all 6 crafters off the ground, and I try to sell anything that anyone would buy, I obsessively pick up everything I come across, but I find that nobody really buys anything, so mostly I am credit-starved.

Maybe once we establish the play-rotation of the 8 classes it will go better.

OMG, finally the use for slicing! But my husband had slicing and never got Augment schematics. Not sure why? My only slicer is Mako and I haven't played with BH much. Most of my toons are UWT, with a couple of INV and a couple of THs.

Don't bother with lower than cap augment schematics. Few use them and those who do have sources for them. If you are a completionist (someone who wants all schematics just because you can)...good luck with that.

Not me, I don't augment unless I have a slot already built in and happen to have a schematic (I think I have like 2 low levels). My husband keeps wondering about it, so now I have an answer for him. Apparently, he never ran Sliced Parts missions much, mostly lockboxes :) Now, I just have to run a test on Mako to demonstrate that it is possible to get a schematic. :)

While leveling it is best to just run lockbox missions as they earn you credits and a chance at discovered (one-shot) missions. OTOH Sliced Parts missions are less cost effective as there is little demand for the materials; the only benefits being the chance at an augment schematic. But the only reason they are high priced is due to low supply not high demand.

I tend to just gather the stuff myself, its far, FAR cheaper then buying it from the GTN, most of the time....the prices change so insanely fast is impossible to keep track of it, sometimes materials so easily gathered for free with 30mins of time are sold for like 40k and then suddenly its 2k.

I swear its the greedy type of crafters that somehow manipulate the stockmarket to benefit them.

That's because some idiot severely undercuts the value and then more idiots undercut the first. SMART sellers undercut by small amounts and the value remains consistent

You and I have debated this before. Yes, sellers post items at as high a value as they can, but if buyers buy then the price is right.

But the definition of "fair" is: agreeing with what is thought to be right or acceptable (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fair). Just because YOU feel prices are generally too high does not make the practices on the GTN "unfair."

  1. Sellers post items on the GTN at whatever price they feel
  2. Buyers want those items and so they look to the GTN
  3. If the price is too high then the buyer does not buy (up to the individual)
  4. If enough buyers refuse to buy then pricing comes down
  5. eventually a tacit/implicit "agreement" happens: a majority of buyers will buy at a price that sellers are willing to sell at.

Now I will admit, that "majority" might be a simple majority; 50.1% of the buyers and sellers find the pricing "fair." But majority rules.

In the beginning, I used to put modable droid armor on GTN for what I think a beginner JK can pay (few Ks). They were of course bought up quite fast and relisted for an outrageous price. It is called flipping in MMO, arbitrage in RL, some find it fun. With an open market like GTN forget any other kind of trade than strict supply and demand. Not a matter of only thinking of one's own profit. It just is not possible to do anything else, or you are just arbitrage-fodder.

I think bioware should put min and max prices on the GTN, it would be so much more better.

I think bioware should put min and max prices on the GTN, it would be so much more better.

And how wide a range should the min max be?

And how is the min and max determined?

And what if the min that is set is too high so that buyers don't buy?

And what if the max that is set is too low as to have sellers leave the market?

And what if YOU do not like what BW decides the range is?

You are asking for an objective answer to VERY subjective questions.

And, all the above questions have been answered; you simply dislike the answers generated by the populous at large. Buyers and sellers have determined a rough min and max value on any given item. A couple of examples:

  • I work the grade 28 blue quality mods market pretty heavily and in that market the typical value range is 10k-20k each. When supply is high it is more in the 10k range and when supply is low it reaches the 20k range. Most commonly though the value is 12k to 15k each. And demand is consistent: I usually sell 10-20 mods a day but not always the same ones.

  • I also work the augment markets heavily and they are far more volatile. The range that augments has is 55k to 120k with an average of 70k to 80k. Right now on The Harbinger supplies are high and demand is apparently low and so value is extra low.

Are those ranges objectively "wrong?" That question is impossible to answer because there is no objective answer. Just because someone posts a bunch of grade 28 blue mods at 50k or an augment at 250k does not mean anyone is willing to buy at those prices. Yes, those sellers are trying to find a desperate buyer. But the rest of us are not like that; we have agreed with our buyers that item X is worth somewhere between Y and Z credits based on many factors.

I guess I suck at making credits so I am actually worried about the missions costs. I'll just do Corellia in Lvl 49 rags and stop there for now until I find a smarter ways to play.

Ok, from this post it really seems you need more starter tips than the intermediate advice you're getting. So, please take the following as the suggestions they are meant as... and apologies in advance if this is all stuff you know and for the length.

Now, I can't really tell what your goals are, or why you're concerned about lvl 9 mats. Are you looking to be self-sufficient? Master all the companion skills? Just enjoy crafting? Or do you feel that doing your own crafting is the easiest/cheapest way to go?

If it's the last then that couldn't be further from the truth. Crafting is a massive... MASSIVE credit and time sink, especially if you're unfamiliar with the game, which it sounds like you are. I'd avoid it completely until you have at least one max level character under your belt. So, my first advice is get your favorite/highest level character to 55, gear that character up reasonably well so they can make quick credits consistently for you, THEN go back and start crafting/"companioning".

Instead of using "lvl 49 rags", I suggest getting yourself a cheap set of adaptive armor (last I checked I think you can get a set of the cheapest stuff for less than 5-10k per piece). Then use planetary comms to buy the mods you need to fill them up. It will be much more cost effective in the long run.

This goes hand-in-hand with my general advice when you first start out: stockpile planetary comms. The only time you should even consider any other reward is if you are almost completely full or they offer a purple (or blue, always get the two mixed up) box or item you specifically need. The other rewards aren't nearly worth it IMO, and you can always find better stuff on the GTN to fill in the gaps. If you've been solo questing to level to this point, you should have enough that you might even be able to completely mod out your first set of adaptive armor with lvl 49 mods.

Once you're geared that way, it should become much, MUCH easier to finish your class quest than using "rags", lol. Do so, because I believe you still need to finish the class quest to unlock the Belsavis bonus and Ilum quest lines. These quests can be soloed and will open up the dailies as well. Most all of the dailies on these planets are soloable, some with more effort than others, but when they are heroics they will let you know so you can avoid them. These dailies (and the Black Hole as well) will award "classic" comms, which you can use to buy mods that are a bit higher grade than the ones available from the fleet planetary comm vendors. They'll also allow you to get some credits coming in. If memory serves (I haven't done Belsavis dailies in awhile), you can typically net 125k+ in about 1.5-2 hours of dailies on Belsavis (I want to say it's more creds and less time, but I'd rather undersell than over promise... plus, it gets faster as you get better gear and more familiar with the missions), and around 50-60k for 20-30 mins on Ilum in addition to the comms.

A couple days of doing that will get you and your primary companion well geared, have a fair amount of credits in the bank, and should have you leveled to around 53/54 (just to make it easier on yourself). At that time, I'd recommend spending your money and upgrading your equipment to lvl 53/54 gear and heading to Makeb or wherever and finishing the trek to 55. That's when I'd go back and start working towards completing your companion skills and/or gearing up alt characters.

Now, someone mentioned the dailies get boring after awhile... that's true. However, it also sounds like you have yet to make it that far yet, so boredom shouldn't be a problem for quite some time (if repetition gets to you THAT quickly, MMOGs in general probably won't hold your interest for long). At any rate, while you're still building a bankroll, having all those dailies available for varieties sake gives you options whenever creds get low. It's not the most efficient method, but if you're limited to strictly soloing then it's actually pretty close, especially once you've geared yourself up a bit.

Also, another credit sink that could be contributing to keeping you "credit poor" is spending them on missions for gathering skills when you don't need to. Gather as you level, ESPECIALLY for slicing. Slicing is all profit if you're collecting those nodes/boxes as you go, and ONLY doing missions if you find that you've fallen behind where you're questing or when you get to the point in your crafting that you need the missions for a specific reward. It's bad enough having to pay to level the mission skills, even worse having to pay to learn new schems AND for the mats to craft them from the crafting skills... make the leveling from the gathering trees as cheap as you possibly can! ;)

Hope I've explained that all well enough, and that it helps somewhat... and good luck! :D

My level 49 rags is the orange set of gear filled with L49 mods I got for commodations :) I wanted to craft L50+ mods so I can have gear I can do Corellia and Ilum in without dying too too much since dying is expensive. I also need to craft to keep the rest of the characters in gear (I try to develop Biochem, Synth and Armormech as I go, but those are non-essential just filling the gaps so I keep them about 4 levels above the level of the most of my characters relying on Cybertech + plan comms for the rest). Of course they do their gathering/missions as well, so fingers crossed I can supply all 6 crafters from the remaining 6 characters. I really do want to progress through the class stories though as well. :) I keep hoping that the Legacy will start working for me in a way that will permit faster credit accumulation and resolve my 'always in the red' problems.

I don't understand how a Level 55 character is going to make me credits tbh. I am actually afraid of leveling her to L55 (the training cost at level 50 was astronomical for me) and because I would feel sad I can't play with her any more, her story will be over. Where is she going to do it, if she runs out of content that can be done in simple blue gear (i.e. Corellia quest line?) I cannot PvP (no talent at all) and I cannot group (machine crashes). I am starting to run all the Bonus Series I skipped on her now, and all the old heroics I over-levelled to get comms to update the primary companion (he is now in L47) and scavenge for low level mats for the rest of the crews. On the low level toons I now force my hubby to do ALL heroics (yes, even 4+, man UP!) and FPs as they come up to get access to more comms and gear.

Then I am out of ideas. Except...

I've never really tried dailies, I just assume they are hard to do. I can try that... but if the only one I have seen so far were Voss-Ka and Flashpoints. And I can't do Flashpoints on solo characters :(

I've never really tried dailies, I just assume they are hard to do. I can try that... but if the only one I have seen so far were Voss-Ka and Flashpoints. And I can't do Flashpoints on solo characters :(

The reasons why the level cap (at this point 55) makes making credits easier are:

- no more training: what credits you earn are yours to do with as you please. Oh and on that note level 50 is a huge training point. 51-55 are MUCH less.

- quest rewards are purely credits; because XP is no longer valued quest rewards have an increased credits reward.

As to being afraid of no more story at the level cap...that cannot be further from the truth. Beyond Corellia and the end of the class story there are many stories still to be experienced:

  • The planet Ilum - granted you will not be able to complete the story right away without grouping (two flashpoints finish the story), but that group content can be soloed later...at the level cap.
  • The Black Hole - an area on Corellia dedicated to daily quests. IIRC there are six solo dailies and one group one. And the group one can be soloed again at the level cap
  • Section X - an area on Belsavis dedicated to daily quests. Again there are six or seven solo daily quests and one 2+ group quest and one 4 group quest. The 2+ is soloable, but the 4 has to be done with a group (the final stage requires four players)
  • Belsavis has another daily area that is part of the Bonus quest story line.
  • The planet Makeb - 100% solo story content and daily quests that run parallel
  • CZ-198 - the story requires that you run flashpoints, but these are the first "tactical" FPs so they are tuned to be done without a tank and/or a healer so they too are soloable. There are also a number of solo daily quests
  • Oricon - 90% solo story content. The last quests in the story are a 2+ group and the two operations: dread fortress and dread palace
  • Kuat Drive Yards - another tactical FP that ties in the Galactic Starfighter (GSF) expansion to the ground game. Short story but its there
  • And lastly the start of a new story line...the assaults on Tython and Korriban. Again tactical FPs, that initiate the next chapter.

My question regarding your inability to group is what are your computer's specifications and what type of internet connection do you have? The reason I ask is simple: I have been playing this game since its inception and I have been playing it on a fairly old computer...until quite recently. Unless your computer barely meets the minimum requirements to play the game (meaning it would have to be going on ten years old now), I think there is something else going on.
