Balmorra Bonus Series 2 Bug

Recommended Posts

07/16/2016 - I can't complete the "Balmorra: Bonus Series 2" quest line. I completed Sgt. JoJames quest apparently out-of-order from the bonus series breadcrumb. When I was sent to Col. Hunt for the Bonus Series 2, I complete the quest for Major Garik and returned. The map/minimap shows the icon for completion over Sgt. Jojames, but I can't click on him. I abandoned and then retook "Balmorra: Bonus Series 2" hoping it would restart, reset, or somehow complete the quest. It did not. However, the quest now shows both sub-missions complete, bit it won't let me complete the quest or progress it. I opened a Customer Service Ticket #28903656. The text reply is below. It recommended I file a bug report here, and I did so in game as well. So, here's hoping that someday it gets resolved and it will drop out of my quest log. Thanks for any assistance.

Text from Customer Service regarding ticket # 28903656

Greetings Windhunter,

My name is Fernando, I’m a Specialist here at Star Wars ™: The Old Republic™ Customer Support, thanks for getting in touch about this issue.

I am sorry for the delay on getting to your ticket, we have a slight backlog at the moment, thanks for your patience while awaiting the reply!

Unfortunately after checking this case I'm afraid this is an InGame bug and it's something we can't fix from the Customer Support department.

In order to track this issue I'd ask you to post it as a Bug Report in our Community: http://www.swtor.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=417

I do apologize about this, thank you for your patience and understanding and don't hesitate to contact me again if you need further assistance.

Just to let you know, I have to close your ticket for you to see my reply but closing the ticket does not assume your issue is resolved. It's just necessary for you to see this message. You are more than welcome to send in another one if you have additional information or issues.

Sincerely,

Fernando

I had just come to report this exact issue (and I see it periodically in threads before this).

Balmorra: Bonus Series 2 will not advance. After completing the initial step, there are 2 tasks listed:

+Complete "Nowhere to Run" for Sergeant Jojames

+Complete "The Neutralizer" for Major Garik

However, prior to obtaining this mission, I had already completed "Nowhere to Run" for Sergeant Jojames and he will not talk to me again. I went ahead and completed Major Garik, but now there is no task listed in the task list (just the orange title) and my mission log shows both grayed out, but does not advance.

I've reset the mission, but now neither will talk to me (because I've already done their missions) and it still will not advance. Note that both of them have a mission marker on the map, but not in person and neither will talk to you, they just give an in game response referring to the fact that you've already done their missions.

To reproduce:

Do explorable missions for Sergeant Jojames.

Pick up Balmorra Bonus Series 2.

Progress that mission as far as possible

Stuck

Ideally, the Bonus mission should recognize that you've already completed the mission and advance, but, failing that, Jojames should not talk to you unless you have the Bonus Series 2 mission.

Congratualtions, you triggered the Bonus Series Bug! Please post your experience in the main thread, so everyone's experiences with this horrible bug are all collected in a single location.

If you actually did a search, then why did you not contribute to the main thread?

I can confirm that the bug is still active. I apparently did the missions in the wrong order or something. So I followed the suggestion of resetting. This allowed me to complete the first mission, but now neither Major Garik or Sgt. Jojames can be interacted with. Given that this is still going on 6 years later, I doubt very seriously if it will ever be fixed!

The bug is still active. I really hope you can fix this issue as soon as possible.

I pretty much guarantee that it won't be fixed, given what Kryptonomic said back in January 2019:

Actually, the fix is easy in this case. The quest chains are stored in the database via flags. The problem with this particular quest chain is that the subsequent series of quests are available before the first in the series is done. This is because the flag in the database is not set to indicate the quests are dependent quests. So they all show up at once, rather than dependent on which one has been completed. Literally flipping that flag would fix the issue.

This was brought up during actual testing (not user testing) years ago. Bioware simply didn't fix it. Part of the reason for the lack of fix was because at that time the bonus series missions were gated by your level and as long as people didn't overlevel, this issue could be considered mitigated a bit. That became less true as they made leveling so much quicker.

The reason it wasn't fixed after even that is because it was known the bonus series elements were going to be deprioritized. From an in-game perspective, that entailed moving quest givers to the fleet (which actually wouldn't have mitigated this issue). The bonus series were seen now as getting in the way of getting players to later content and the work they were prioritizing more.

Perhaps ironically, the quest chain system is actually one of the areas where the dev team doesn't have tight coupling and low cohesion in the code base.

Guys, please contribute your experience to the main thread.

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=849398

If you start contributing to other threads, the severity of this bug gets diluted amongst all of them, and then Bioware won't realize just how this affects an enormous amount of players' playthroughs. It also keeps all the information in one place, making it easier for both players and developers to see everything there is on this bug.

I appreciate you trying to help out. But As an ex designer of Fallen Earth. I don't know if you realize it's been 4 years -this game is on life support. The team is very small and the only thing they would be able to update would be doing server updates for the monthly events and fixing smaller bugs related to newer content. Posting in that thread of yours is not labeled properly for this issue because it's titled TARIS BONUS SERIES. Not to mention you got one response 1 year ago by a community manager to get player's hopes up that hasn't even been active for along time.

Bioware as a company was outsourced along time ago by EA, all the people who worked on this game don't anymore - Those 4 - 6-year-old bug report stickys are from people who don't work there anymore. Customer support is run by EA and they hire foreign workers at a cheaper price to work in those positions. Like a call center. As for the bug report forum - The Q&A Droid is just there to make players keep playing and spending money. "It will be fixed in the future patch" It's called marketing. That's what a community manager's job is. They are PR people like Todd Howard or J Allen Brack from Activision/Blizzard.

For any MMORPG project If you ever see an actual developer responding to bug reports in forums for thats when they are taken seriously and things are getting done, but if you see threads that have been sitting there for years that usually means the project is on life support.

I know this from personal experience. It's why I no longer work with AA development teams or in the gaming industry anymore.

  1. Based on the rest of your response, this is bantha poodoo. You don't appreciate my effort at all.
  2. I have no reason to believe you worked for a professional game studio.
  3. It's the same damn bug as the Taris Bonus Series bug, and it can happen on any planet with a bonus series. If you actually read through the thread, you'd know that.
  4. Then why even bother posting if you have no faith it will ever get addressed and fixed?
  5. I know customer service has been offshored. It's so obvious when I report a bug and they think I'm talking about different kind of bug and redirected to the forum or submit a ticket and I'm just redirected to the forum in their canned responses and even sometimes, with bad grammar.
  6. Seriously, why the hell are you here then, to discourage anyone from posting bugs and convince them to leave?

I'm not stupid nor naive, but I'm still going to hold them accountable. If you do nothing, you have a 100% chance of nothing getting done.

OMG why is this bug not fixed?

Why would you 3 years later have a bug not fixed yet?

I am a programmer myself for 40 years and never would I just let a bug go for 3 years?

Maybe I have more skill and decency to my customers and bosses and they do not here?
