That's what happens in Chapter IX of KotFE, whether you want it to or not. Oh, sorry, you meant "join the Republic". No. The (Rebel) Alliance of ANH, ESB and RotJ won't exist for another 3640 in-game years. Not to mention that the *Empire* of the films is, in fact, the Republic anyway. The Empire of the game is the "Sith Empire", not the "Galactic Empire" which is just a corrupted and subverted version of the Galactic Republic as it existed at the beginning of Phantom Menace. The only thing you can actually do is become a saboteur against the Empire, (though it has been fun on my empire characters) but joining the Republic as of yet is not possible. Whether it will be later in the story remains to be seen but I would not hold out hope for that, though a lot of saboteurs would like to switch sides but I don't see that happening due to various thing i.e. fleet for one.
