I know that doing that specifically is difficult but doing something like almost 3D image previews is something that is possible! I have been working on proof of concept examples using your current database and I have prepared two example - functionality such as using the rotate buttons in preview are disabled because I was a little lazy when working on the example. The php variable directs to where I have the images located for the set and in a working environment the left and right buttons would move back and forth the images in the directory of the images. In use you would probably want to use javascript to preload the images to the browser and use the left/right buttons almost as like arrows in a web gallery. Implementing something like thinks would require someone taking pictures of the preview option at least 4 times - front, back, left and right sides - while the more the merrier. All preview images would HAVE to be the same zoom distance for a set - meaning that Set A would all have to be zoomed out at the same level while Set B can be another zoom level - just make sure all images are the same distance. It would also require a server side script that can render the images or someone else that can simply remove everything and leave a render preview of the item. Since bioware implemented the preview plane to be the same dimensions for everyone, it is really easy to work on rendering the images!
