Commissioning an item from a complete stranger can be scary. Some feel they have little control over the situation, and when sending millions out in both credits and crafting materials, it is understandable why some people can be nervous and on edge. While we are a small and close knit community here on The Ebon Hawk, scamming unfortunately does happen. Because we are, as I said, small and close knit, word travels fast, but that seldom makes the victim feel any better. However; there are things that you can do to protect yourself from being taken advantage of and losing your hard earned materials and credits.

 

1. Talk with the crafter, send a mail, message them in game, confirm in some way that they are the same person crafting the item you are seeking and that they are still crafting items on commission.

 

2. If a crafter has a fee tied to their services, request that they CoD the completed item to you. This allows you to protect your credits, and the vast majority of us crafters have no issue with using this method. Generally if a crafter is unwilling to CoD something, you're better off finding a different crafter.

 

3. Include a message in your order. In SwTor, if items are retrieved from a mail that has no message body, the mail is deleted automaticly, this can make life incredibly hard on the crafter and some may not even bother trying to track you down. By including a message in your mail body, providing all the required information, you minimize the risk of your order being lost.

4. Be Smart! As lame as that sounds, trusting your gut instinct is the best way to insure you don't get scammed, if a guy seems fishy, go find someone else. As stated before, word travels fast on this server, if someone scams someone, we will hear about it.

 

 

It is not hard to find stories of a person requesting an item being taken advantage of and scammed. I know there are plenty of those stories on this server alone. But there is another side to the coin, crafters can get scammed to. Be it from supply deals going wrong, people claiming you didn't fulfill their order, to those falsely accusing you of scamming, crafters are exposed to risks just like those who would commission items from them. As with all things though, there are things you can do to minimize these risks.

 

1. NOTES- This is hands down the most important part of being a crafter, especially a big name crafter. I cannot stress this enough. When you have multiple orders coming in, multiple people's materials mixing together, potentially handling millions of credits, it can become quite overwhelming. It is possible to lose orders, get orders mixed up, and in this confusion people claiming you messed up their order when you didnt, hoping to scam a freebie out of you. By taking detailed notes and keeping track of the materials coming in and the items going out, you minimize the risks of all of the above happening. The better organized you are, the better your returns will be.

 

I would suggest using either a Microsoft Excell/Google Docs Spreadsheet or (what I did) keeping a note book by your computer that everything is recorded in. I still have all the orders from the last round of crafting. I personally like to keep fairly detailed notes.

Every single order I received and completed I filled this out for. HST=My time zone. By keeping track of the time I did things, I was able to give accurate estimates on my turn around time.

 

2. Always tripple check everything. Make sure you are crafting the right item for the right person, make sure you are crafting the right quanity, make sure you are sending out the right items to the right person and MAKE SURE YOU CLICK COD! You can never check something too many times when you're dealing with items the value in the millions.

 

3. Communicate with the person requesting your services. A common mistake amongst people happens between Acute and Adept, make sure that what you provide, is indeed what they are looking for.

 

4. Be honest. If someone sends you a mail with mats requesting an item you can't make. Return the mats and credits. A quick gain now can ruin your reputation and prevent you from ever crafting again on this server.

 

By taking simple precautions here and there, you as a crafter or as a commissioner, can greatly reduce your risks of being scammed. As with everything, just be smart about it, and if you feel you have been scammed, before you freak out and blast their name up here, try and sort out the misunderstanding, and always, innocent until proven guilty. I will likely not finish the Enhancment portion till I get home from classes today. I will try and get through as much of it as I can though. The Hilts/Barrels Armorings and Mod section should be complete, if there any broken links or mistakes please let me know. The Relic was also listed as well.

 

 

I would also like to strongly encourage everyone to read the post on tips on how to stay safe directly below the crafting list. The last thing we want is for someone to get taken advantage of, great tips for those new to the craft game, great refreshers for the veterans.
